As The Witcher’s second season approaches, arriving on Netflix December 17, fans can look forward to meeting new faces and reconnecting with old ones. Geralt’s beloved Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and members of the Lodge of Sorceresses such as Fringilla (Mimî M. Khayisa) take on even more important roles than they did last season. And as the White Wolf’s stories grow ever more epic, someone like his good friend Jaskier (Joey Batey) must be there to spread them.

Chalotra, Khayisa, and Batey spoke to Screen Rant about the directions their characters take in The Witcher season 2, and how their various dynamics play out through the season.

Screen Rant: How do your relationships to the Lodge of Sorceresses shift in the wake of the first season’s battle?

Mimî M. Khayisa: I think true to life, the people you can have the biggest friction with are actually people you are naturally drawn to, or you like something in them and you might not have it yourself. I think that’s what Fringilla’s draw is to Yennefer. Just doing those scenes with Anya and being able to explore that, I love it. I love their dynamic and I love what they bring out in each other and I want more of it.

Anya Chalotra: In this season, we do just get to see more of Yennefer and Fringilla. I think that’s a really important dynamic for the show because they know so much of each other’s experience and yet they still can’t get on board with each other or influence each other in the ways that I think they can both influence each other. I suppose they do learn from each other in the end. I think this season, you realize that actually, Fringilla is on her own path has kind of learned a lot from Yennefer and vice versa in that really important moment at the beginning of season two.

Now, Joey, can you talk to me about where we find your character at the start of season 2 and how his relationship is explored with Yennefer?

Joey Batey: Jaskier, we find him a bit more famous, a bit more confident in some ways. He’s hunted for fame and for glory and for money for most of his life. I think for the first time he is now realizing that that’s not what he craves. That’s not what he needs. He’s looking to belong and looking for a family and looking for stories to tell.

There is a small connection between Yennefer and Jaskier that’s blossoming, that’s blooming. I think that they’re still mortal frenemies, but it means that we get to see a more vulnerable side to Jaskier, a Jaskier that perhaps is leaving his ego at the door and in order to open himself up to new people and let people in. That’s what was most rewarding for me shooting season two.

Mimî, what do you think Fringilla’s biggest strength is as she goes into the season that, at least at the start, is a tricky place for the character?

Mimî M. Khayisa: I think at the start of season two, her biggest positive is that she’s willing to listen. She’s willing to listen to outside influences and she’s willing to trust that when she doubts something, there might be a reason for it. She doesn’t have to stick to the same line just because she said whatever she said in the past. I think that’s a really good thing for her.

Anya, what did you want to bring to the role of Yennefer this season that wasn’t necessarily on the page?

Anya Chalotra: A lot of Yennefer’s journey isn’t necessarily in the books. So we create a lot of it. I think in terms of our scripts, I feel like it was all there for me. I think it always is. With Yennefer for this season, I wanted to be a bit more considered. I wanted to consider things a lot more and not be so quick to judge and to listen more, to learn more, to be more open to other people. She makes an unlikely alliance this season that really changed the perspective on things. She definitely matures this season. I wanted to show that growth.
