Apex Legends Could Expand Beyond The Battle Royale Genre

Although it’s already a revolutionary and influential battle royale title, Apex Legends might eventually expand beyond its initial genre, according to the game’s director. Apex Legends draws a lot of inspiration from the Titanfall universe, going as far as borrowing some of the canceled Titanfall 3 concepts and briefly reintroducing signature wall-running mechanics.

During the Halloween Fight of Fright 2020 event, Apex Legends players were treated to a new version of the Shadow Royale LTM, which lets players respawn as vengeful spirits upon death. This year, there were plenty of changes and enhancements to the mode, including brand new rules and resurrected wall-running mechanics. Unfortunately, regular characters do not have access to Titanfall’s signature movement technique, but Shadows can actually run along the walls and perform double jumps at will.

Apex Legends director Chad Grenier revealed in an interview with Eurogamer that the game might eventually expand beyond its current battle royale focus. Respawn is constantly looking for opportunities to improve and grow, and one of the few directions the developers might take is searching for new ways to play Apex Legends. According to Grenier, the Apex Legends’ development team is discussing different ideas and suggestions on how to use the game’s rich roster of characters, which will obviously expand over time with new faces. As a starting point, Grenier mentions various limited-time modes that regularly appear in the game with seasonal events. These are actually the very first cautious iterations of new ways to play the game, but the director believes that in the long-term, Apex Legends will evolve beyond its core battle royale premise, which is still kept in the LTMs.

While Respawn is seemingly focused on Apex Legends trying to build upon the game’s initial concept with the help of new mechanics, the community still wants to hear anything Titanfall-related. A potential sequel has already been rumored to be in development, although the team denies any reports, firmly stating that nothing is being currently worked on. However, several unrelated sources have recently hinted at the possibility of Titanfall 3 entering the pre-production phase.

At its core, Apex Legends is a mix of a battle royale title and a hero shooter, which definitely helps when fantasizing about new potential ways of playing the game. Respawn’s experiments might even be closer than Grenier implies, as according to dataminers, there is a supposed Arena mode on its way. This would be a perfect fit for the title’s already rich roster of heroes while in the long-term, the development team might even consider revitalizing the MOBA-shooter genre within its established battle royale project.
