Apple Watch Series 5 & Watch SE Charging Issue (& Fix) Explained

watchOS 7.3.1 fixes a charging issue on Apple Watch Series 5 and Watch SE models running a recent version of watchOS. The Apple Watch continues to be a popular option for anyone in the market for a smartwatch and that doesn’t look likely to be changing anytime soon. However, with smartwatches tending to come with batteries that don’t last as long as other devices, any charging problem can be a major issue.

The Apple Watch offers plenty of features that make it an appealing option. Whether it is the variety of styles to choose from or the advanced health-related features on offer, the Apple Watch can be an ideal accessory for an iPhone user. While the Series 6 is the latest and most premium Apple Watch, there are still plenty of Series 5 models in circulation. Likewise, with the Watch SE offering newer internals at a much cheaper price, it is also likely to be a popular option.

Some Apple Watch Series 5 and Watch SE models appear to have been suffering from a charging issue. Essentially, when these models enter Power Reserve mode, they are unable to charge. Considering Power Reserve mode is typically enabled when the battery reaches a critical level, this is likely to have been a major problem. According to Apple, the issue is understood to only affect “a very small number of customers” and can be fixed by simply updating to watchOS 7.3.1.

How To Check & What To Do If Fix Doesn’t Work

Firstly, the charging problem only affects Series 5 and Watch SE models that have been updated to either watchOS 7.2 or 7.3. Therefore, any other models, or Series 5 and Watch SE smartwatches running on a different OS version, shouldn’t be concerned about the issue. Regardless, a check to see if the problem is present on any Apple Watch model can be performed by enabling Power Reserve mode, placing the watch on a charger and waiting for thirty minutes. To manually enable Power Reserve mode, open Control Center by swiping up on the watch face, tap the battery percentage and then drag the Power Reserve slider to the on position.

While it remains unclear what exactly was causing the problem, the watchOS 7.3.1 update alone should be enough to fix the issue and allow Watch Series 5 and Watch SE models to charge again when in Power Reserve mode. However, if users still encounter the same problem, then it is likely the device will need to be sent back to Apple. A mail-in repair can be arranged by contacting Apple Support directly and as long as the problem is the one the update is designed to fix, the Apple Watch repair will be free.
