Army Of The Dead Zeus Costume Connections To Batman And Superman Explained

The appearance of Army of the Dead’s king zombie, Zeus, features some similarities to the two most important characters of Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Superman and Batman. Army of the Dead was released shortly after the famed Snyder Cut of the Justice League. However, the director had started working on the zombie movie while the Snyder Cut was still a hopeful idea in his and the fans’ minds. Now, both movies have received praise for their original style, although Army of the Dead seems to have a more secure future as a franchise than Snyder’s plans for the DCEU.

While Snyder’s vision for the DC Extended Universe is known for its dark and sometimes bleak take on the famous Justice League heroes, Army of the Dead features some of the most unconventional zombies to date. The undead are smart, agile, and strong, so much so that it wouldn’t be outlandish to picture Ben Affleck’s Batman struggling to have a one-on-one fight with many of them. Since they’re incredibly intelligent, they also possess a rough concept of culture and hierarchy.

Zeus and the Queen are the top Alpha zombies. Zeus, patient zero in this universe, dons a cape and carries a mask. These two elements by themselves aren’t enough to remind viewers of Superman and Batman, but Zack Snyder’s direction and cinematography choices bring them closer to his version of the Justice League heroes. For instance, the way Zeus makes his ominous entrances, backlit and with his cape flowing in the wind, is reminiscent of Superman coming out of his ship in Man of Steel and the Snyder Cut. It also helps that Zeus is supposed to be the first human who turned into a zombie, while Superman is bound to turn evil due to Darkseid’s Anti-Life Equation and plunge the world into chaos.

Zeus also wears and carries an armored mask similar to the one Batman uses to fight Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when he’s out in the field. With the hot and dry environment of a dystopian Vegas around him, Zeus resembles Batman during the apocalyptic Knightmare timeline, powerful and intimidating but secretly desperate to survive. Zeus is also a king among the shamblers, and some scenes in Army of the Dead help draw parallels between his role as the zombies’ savior and the role of Superman and Batman in Zack Snyder’s part of the DCEU.

The director’s passion for both Army of the Dead and Zack Snyder’s Justice League is patent on every frame of both movies. One of the biggest differences between the two projects might be the degree of studio intervention, but Snyder’s distinct style is evident. Some similarities between the two, whether intentional or not, were going to be inevitable.
