Army Of The Deads Prequel Will Revive The Movies Best Character

WARNING: Spoilers for Army of the Dead.

The upcoming Netflix movie Army of Thieves will revive Ludwig Dieter, a popular character from Zach Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Portrayed by German actor Matthias Schweighöfer, the safecracker comes face to face with the Zombie King in the original movie, though it’s unclear if he’s killed by the Alpha or manages to survive the climactic nuclear strike that decimates Las Vegas. Army of Thieves won’t “revive” Dieter in the literal sense, but will rather explore his backstory prior to the zombie outbreak.

Dieter steals nearly every scene in Army of the Dead. When he’s offered $250,000 by Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) to participate in a Sin City heist, he compares a vault map to a sexual experience with the titular subject of Botticelli’s “Madonna of the Magnificat.” Dieter later speaks romantically to The Olympus safe, known as “Götterdämmerung,” and screams maniacally (with a high-pitched voice) when fending off zombies. Unsurprisingly, Dieter’s odd behavior and unique worldview piques the interest of his comrades, all of whom must accept he’s much better at cracking safes than killing zombies. Since Army of the Dead reveals little about Dieter’s backstory, Schweighöfer’s comedic timing becomes especially important during each of his scenes.

Army of Thieves will reportedly be a romantic comedy with few zombies, according to producer Deborah Snyder. The prequel movie stars Schweighöfer opposite Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline, who will presumably be the safecracker’s love interest. Army of the Dead foreshadows the sequel’s narrative during Dieter’s introduction, in which Scott and Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera) recruit him at Gwendoline’s Safe & Lock Co. Since Emmanuel doesn’t appear in the first movie, it’s possible her character doesn’t survive Army of Thieves. In that case, her theoretical death and transformation into a shambler would not only strengthen Dieter’s long-term character arc but may also explain why he’s never killed a zombie before. Schweighöfer’s character may have been traumatized from the experience, and then re-named his business after Gwendoline.

If Gwendoline remains alive in Army of the Dead’s timeline, then Army of Thieves might have a traditional rom-com tone. Dieter appears to be a hopeless romantic in the first film, one who makes awkward statements around others. So, it will be interesting to see how he communicate feelings for a human woman, as opposed to a Las Vegas vault. Army of Thieves may use the zombie premise for contextual purposes, and then follow the protagonists as they attempt to pull off a heist. Gwendoline’s Safe & Lock Co. could be a business owned by Emmanuel’s character, or it may be a convenient cover for Dieter. What’s known for sure is that Army of Thieves follows Dieter’s journey to America, per Screen Rant’s own interview with Schweighöfer:

“I just finished a prequel for my character, so everything is in that film. But the biography was that Dieter was – I can’t say that, because it’s a spoiler alert. You will love the prequel. His way to America is awesome. It’s crazy.”

Army of Thieves could give new meaning to Dieter’s behavior in Army of the Dead. From the audience’s perspective, it may be wildly entertaining when he screams while battling zombies, but that could be the result of deep-rooted issues. In Army of the Dead, Dieter conveys a stern demeanor when interrupted by Ward, and that may be the result of a previous experience with Emmanuel’s character in Army of Thieves. Dieter may be grappling with unresolved issues involving zombies and safecracking, potentially because Gwendoline interrupted his work in Army of Thieves or turned into a shambler. Dieter sacrifices himself in Army of the Dead to save Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) and might’ve made that decision because he failed to act in the prequel. Whatever happens with Dieter or Gwendoline, Army of Thieves will presumably add context to the safecracker’s “death or rebirth” line in Army of the Dead while speaking to Vanderohe.
