Arrowverse Theory Why ReverseFlash Saved Damien Darhk in Armageddon

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for The Flash season 8, episode 4, “Armageddon, Part 4.”

A new theory suggests that the resurrection of Damien Darhk in The Flash Armageddon event was all part of the Reverse-Flash’s plan to kill the Legends of Tomorrow rather than an unintended side-effect. The infamous master of the dark arts was one of the most dangerous and unpredictable villains in the history of the Arrowverse, having cheated death twice before escaping from Hell. Despite this, there was no obvious reason why Darhk should have been resurrected by the Reverse-Flash’s plans, unless it was by design.

The central storyline of The Flash season 8 Armageddon event found Barry Allen confronted with a dark future where he brought about the end of the world in a moment of madness. This left Barry struggling to prove his innocence to the alien telepath Despero, who had traveled back in time to prevent the coming crisis. Eventually Barry traveled to the future to see the disaster for himself, discovering an alternate timeline where the Reverse-Flash Eobard Thawne had become The Flash instead of him and was on the verge of marrying Iris West. To further complicate matters, Barry had somehow become the Reverse-Flash and was living on borrowed time after Thawne successfully killed Barry as a child.

Ironically, Barry’s only ally in this new timeline was a resurrected Damien Darhk, who had just been released from prison on a technicality. Barry convinced Darhk to use his magic to help him restore the original timeline, since his beloved daughter, Nora, was no longer alive in the Reverse-Flashpoint that Thawne had created. Yet this still begged the question of why Damien Darhk was still alive in the new future, when Damien Darhk’s soul had been destroyed in Legends of Tomorrow season 5.

Damien Darhk’s Role In Armageddon and Killing the Legends

In The Flash season 8, episode 4, “Armageddon, Part 4,” Barry Allen learned that Damien Darhk was alive in the Reverse-Flashpoint reality from a television news broadcast reporting on the massive protest that had been organized across the street from Darhk’s penthouse apartment in Central City. Six months earlier, Darhk had reportedly partnered with the Reverse Flash in a battle that ended in the deaths of multiple superheroes, including all of the Legends of Tomorrow. This shed light on why the heroes in attendance at Iris and Thawne’s wedding had been so enraged by the sight of Barry Allen, who was the Reverse-Flash in this new reality.

The episode did not go into detail listing every team member of the Legends that Damien Darhk had killed, but Sara Lance and Nate Heywood were among the names of the fallen evoked as Batwoman and Sentinel fought a confused Barry Allen. Tech philanthropist Ray Palmer was also among the dead, but it was unclear if he was still a part of the Legends at the time of his death in the Reverse-Flashpoint reality or if he was there in a support capacity like Cisco Ramon, who was revealed to be the director of ARGUS in this reality. Whoever was in the Legends when the team was destroyed, John Constantine was apparently among their ranks at one time, as he provided Frost and Chillblaine with a shielding spell that protected them from Darhk’s magic when they went after him and Barry Allen.

It is fitting that Damien Darhk should be responsible for killing the Legends, given they were his most frequent foe after Darhk’s first death fighting Green Arrow. He did achieve a peace of sorts with most of the team, however, after they took in his daughter and gave her the happiness and stability that he never could. It was the fact that Nora had died in the Reverse-Flashpoint world that led Darhk to help Barry in restoring the timeline, though it would end his existence. Again, this raises the question of why Eobard Thawne would rewrite reality in such a way that it would resurrect Damien Darhk, much less set him up as an ally to his archenemy.

The Legends Thwarted Reverse-Flash Before

It is worth noting that while he has always been obsessed with Barry Allen, the Reverse-Flash has fought other Arrowverse heroes as well. One time remnant of Eobard Thawne was the chief villain of Legends of Tomorrow season 2. This Reverse-Flash formed his own team of time-traveling villains, dubbed the Legion of Doom, recruiting the likes of Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn to help him find the Spear of Destiny. While this Reverse-Flash remnant was briefly able to build a perfect world for himself and his allies, he was ultimately defeated by the Legends and erased from reality.

The Legends Could Have Restored the Timeline

It is also worth noting that all of the heroes who were killed as a result of Damien Darhk’s rampage in the Reverse-Flashpoint reality were among the few who might have been able to restore the original timeline in Barry Allen’s absence. All of the Legends of Tomorrow had developed a degree of immunity to the ravages of paradox and were slower to be affected by changes to the timeline than those who had not extensively traveled in time. This makes it extraordinarily likely that, had the Legends’ timeship AI Gideon detected the anachronisms caused by the Reverse-Flashpoint quickly enough, the Legends could have fixed things before Barry Allen’s arrival. Cisco Ramon might also have had the ability to sense the disturbance as a former breacher and Ray Palmer might have been tech-savvy enough to build his own time machine after his time on the Waverider.

Theory: Reverse-Flash Saved Darhk to Kill the Legends

The Reverse-Flash is nothing if not obsessive and meticulous, and The Flash Armageddon event showed this in several subtle ways. Arranging the death of Joe West, for instance, required “dozens and dozens of coincidences” according to Allegra Garcia’s investigation in “Armageddon, Part 3.” Given that, and the similar number of circumstances the Reverse-Flash Eobard Thawne would have had to arrange in an effort to create his own stable alternate timeline, it seems highly unlikely that the death of the Legends of Tomorrow was a coincidence. It seems probable then that the Reverse-Flash arranged for his former Legion of Doom ally to survive in the Reverse-Flashpoint reality so that Damien Darhk would be in an ideal position to kill all the heroes who had a chance of undoing the Reverse-Flash’s plans.
