Attack on Titan Erens Founding Titan Powers Explained

Fans of Attack on Titan know that Eren Jaeger is a core member of the special operation squad, with stakes rising after his home comes crumbling down, urging Eren to join the elite Titan hunting team. But inside Eren lies an even deeper secret than he thought: he can transform into a full-sized Titan. However, his Founding Titan form is unlike the Titans he fights.

The fall of Wall Maria meant the destruction of Eren’s hometown, during which he was forced to witness his mother’s death, thereby swearing revenge on every Titan within and without the towering walls that keep the remnants of humanity safe. It is this mission that first attracts Eren to Captain Levi’s Squad, which goes beyond the wall to hunt and kill Titans. But everything changed when Eren and the squad walk into the brutal massacre of the compromised Wall Maria… in which Eren himself is eaten by a Titan. Lucky for him, Eren is able to transform into a Titan, and the pain and trauma of the day let him transform and defeat the Titans. But the truth of his powers was only beginning to be revealed.

Eren’s strange Titan form is not as mysterious as his ability to stay sane and ‘in control’ when transformed, but stranger still is his ability to control other Titans with a scream. Both are thanks to his royal blood… for a rather disgusting reason. Eren’s father? He killed and ate the last queen. The royal family passes their abilities in Titan form by consuming another Titan, thus gaining that Titan’s gift. It was Eren’s father, Grisha Jaeger, who found the origin of Titans, and sought to steal the power of the Founding Titan by eating the queen. Then in an effort to protect his son, Grisha injected Eren with Titan serum to trigger his transformation… and eat his own father in a blind rage (granting him the ability to stay sentient). In consuming his father, Eren took the abilities Grisha had gained from eating the queen, thus becoming the Founding Titan, able to control all Titans with his scream.

The members of the royal family of Eldia have been the inheritors of the Founding Titan powers since the walls were built. With their royal blood, they have been able to access some of the more subtle powers of the Founding Titan–the most insidious of which being memory manipulation. Since Titans are just transformed humans, the scream (used correctly) can be used to influence humans, as well. When the 145th king of Eldia, Karl Fritz, relocated the humans of his kingdom and had the walls built around them, he used the hardened bodies of titans to make the core of each wall. When the walls were built, he used the Founding Titan scream to erase the memories of those inside the walls (except the few who were immune to it), and the majority of people went about their lives not remembering a time before the walls, and those that remembered did not pass on the stories.

Now in the Attack on Titan story, Eren is the Founding Titan, and thanks to his sapience he can command legions of Titans. However, he did not gain the royal family’s memory of why the subjects of Ymir can turn into Titans, or why King Fritz moved them all to the island in the first place. And though speculation and fan theories circulate, the current implications are ominous. The one thing that is certain is that Eren may hold the key to saving humanity as they know it from the Titans. The Founding Titan is not bound by the past, so maybe, just maybe, he can pave the way for the future.
