Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender show officially casts Azula, Suki, Avatar Kyoshi, and more. The streaming service began developing a live-action reimagining of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series in 2018. It was originally developed with series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, but they exited Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2020 following creative differences. Netflix continued to develop the series following their departure and recently started production.
Since Avatar: The Last Airbender is now filming, most of the show’s cast members have been announced in recent weeks. It started with the announcement that Gordon Cormier landed the lead role of Avatar Aang, with Kiawentiio’s Katara, Ian Ousley’s Sokka, and Dallas Liu’s Zuko confirmed as other main characters. It has also been revealed that Daniel Dae Kim will be Fire Lord Ozai, Ken Leung will be Commander Zhao, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee will be Uncle Iroh. These cast members make up most of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s biggest roles, but a few more major characters have now been cast.
As shared by Variety, Netflix announced five new female cast members for Avatar: The Last Airbender, which includes finding actresses to play Azula, Suki, and Avatar Kyoshi. Elizabeth Yu (All My Love) has been cast as Zuko’s sister Azula. Maria Zhang will play Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, while Yvonne Chapman (Family Law) will play Kyoshi, the Avatar that Suki’s warriors honor. The cast also includes Tamlyn Tomita (Cobra Kai) as Suki’s mother Yukari, and Casey Camp-Horinek (Reservation Dogs) as Katara and Sokka’s grandmother Gran Gran.
The latest bits of Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action casting are both expected and surprising. Azula, Suki, Avatar Kyoshi, and Gran Gran are major characters in the original series, so their involvement in the Netflix reimagining makes sense. Azula didn’t become a proper character in Avatar: The Last Airbender until season 2, but Elizabeth Yu’s casting should mean she’ll be part of Aang and Zuko’s stories from earlier on. Avatar Kyoshi also didn’t start to have an impact on Aang’s Avatar journey until season 2, so Yvonne Chapman could help give her a bigger role. Meanwhile, Tamlyn Tomita plays a new character in the Avatar franchise, as Suki’s mother wasn’t featured in the original series, and she’s described as the protector of Kyoshi Island.
With five more characters now confirmed to appear in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1, most of the major characters have been found. There are still some other notable individuals like Toph, Ty Lee, Mai, and Hakoda who could also make appearances in the first season. If the current collection of cast members is any indication, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is making some changes to the overall direction of the series. While that might upset some viewers of the original show, this could help ensure that Avatar: The Last Airbender isn’t just rehashing Aang’s story in a live-action setting.
