Avatar Sequels Get A New Logo (Without Papyrus Font)

The upcoming Avatar sequels have gotten a new logo, one that doesn’t feature the dreadful Papyrus font. The first film starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver introduced moviegoers to the world of Pandora. The movie centered around Jake Sully, who was forced to choose between protecting the Na’vi people and following his orders.

When director James Cameron released the film in 2009, Avatar quickly became a massive success, earning over $2 billion at the box office. The film was praised by most critics, while others criticized the film for basically being “Pocahontas in space.” Regardless, Cameron was able to turn Avatar into a smash hit due to the film’s special effects and the use of 3D technology. With the future Avatar sequels, Cameron has revealed that he is aiming to revolutionize the 3D experience, which is possibly part of the reason why the films have been delayed so many times. Several of the cast members from the first film will be returning for the sequels, but the infamous Papyrus font in the original title won’t be.

First revealed on the official Avatar Twitter page, the logo for the Avatar films has been given a new font. The logo’s font was previously made fun of during a Saturday Night Live skit starring Ryan Gosling. The skit revolved around Gosling who was obsessed over the fact that a huge blockbuster was able to get away with using the Papyrus font in its title and logo. Now that Avatar 2 is coming closer, the logo for the sequels has been updated… without the Papyrus font. The logo with the new font can be seen below.

This font will likely be used for Avatar 2 and the three other Avatar sequels that Cameron has announced. Cameron previously revealed that the first two sequels will film back to back, with Avatar 4 and 5 being dependent on the success of them. That being said, Avatar 4 and 5 are still likely to happen, especially since Weaver is already working on those Avatar sequels.

While it may be a small detail, updating the font will likely please a lot of fans. The font certainly hasn’t changed drastically, but it has been altered enough that fans won’t criticize the use of the Papyrus font. The internet often makes fun of movies and TV shows that use the font Comic Sans, but it truly is surprising that a movie as big as Avatar didn’t develop a more unique font for their title and logo. That being said, a font is likely the least of Cameron’s worries with the amount of work he’s putting into developing his Avatar universe.
