After the surprise hit that was Guardians of the Galaxy, many fans were disappointed when the team didn’t show up to help Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Of course, that film had plenty of characters to juggle and Marvel and James Gunn wanted to keep the Guardians in their own corner for the time being. As such, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be a self-contained film, providing each of the characters with their own arc.
That said, we recently learned that the movie will have an end credits scene, which seems like the perfect chance to tee things up for next year’s Avengers: Infinity War (or the recently confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy 3). We’ve know for some time that all of the Guardians would be returning for the film, which makes sense given the cosmic scale of the movie and the battle against Thanos. Considering the Guardians have already gone up against the Big Bad, and Gamora and Nebula are his daughters, it would have been pretty unsatisfying if the gang were absent from the adventure. It’s still unknown how much the Guardians will factor into the conflict, however, as the movie has an ensemble consisting of so many characters.
Complex was able to chat with James Gunn while promoting his film The Belko Experiment and was asked how much the Guardians would factor into Infinity War. He said:
“You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”
Gunn admitting their part won’t be big is really no surprise given how many characters will be in the movie. Still, it’s good to hear they’ll be integral nonetheless. Considering their history and areas of expertise, they’ll certainly be valuable assets in the fight against Thanos. The Mad Titan won’t be alone, either, as we recently learned he may be accompanied by the Black Order from the comics. A recent slip of the tongue from Samuel L. Jackson may also tease another ally in the form of the Red Skull, one of many characters we’ve been hoping to see turn up in Infinity War.
Meanwhile, filming continues for the movie all around the world. Much of the principal photography will be done in Atlanta, but Europe has seen a number of shoots lately. Edinburgh is the most recent location the cosmic adventure is set to film in, teasing global chaos when Thanos comes to town. And after Infinity War? It’s anyone’s guess.
There’s still one more Avengers film planned for 2019, which is shooting back-to-back with Infinity War. Despite what all involved have said, fans are still convinced it will be the second part to the upcoming film. With production in full swing, we’ll likely be getting a lot more news soon and will probably know the truth before long. Until then, we’ll be patiently awaiting an Avengers: Infinity War teaser.
