Martin Gelbspan called women “high maintenance” in the latest episode on Michelle Young’s season of The Bachelorette, and Bachelor Nation is now reacting to his comments. A few weeks ago, fans were introduced to Martin as a 29-year-old personal trainer from Miami, Florida. He didn’t necessarily make the best impression on his first night on the show, but he managed to not ruffle any feathers and not rub people the wrong way during the premiere.

As this season of The Bachelorette went by, however, some viewers started to take issue with Martin. Despite the fact that he received a rose at the end of the Top Gun: Maverick group date in episode 3, Bachelor Nation never felt like he had as solid of a relationship with Michelle as other men in the cast. In any case, viewers gave Martin a pass after he brought Jamie Skaar’s shenanigans to Michelle’s attention. Now, the tide has turned on him once again.

This week, Martin Gelbspan was seen calling women “high maintenance” on The Bachelorette season 18 episode 5. Needless to say, Bachelor Nation fans on social media didn’t react well to it. Michelle Young also seems to be figuring Martin out slowly and surely, and some viewers thought that he’d be sent home during the latest episode. However, it seems like Michelle hasn’t cracked the code on Martin yet, which led to him staying in the competition for another week. Unfortunately, Chris Sutton and Leroy Arthur were among the three eliminated contestants in week five.

It never bodes well for men on The Bachelorette to issue opinions perceived as misogynistic on a show with a fanbase like Bachelor Nation. Particularly in recent years, viewers aren’t letting comments like these slide on TV. As seen in the tweets above, it is particularly ironic when a man who reads as “high maintenance” goes on to put that label on women. With the fans questioning Martin’s statements and Michelle learning more about him as the season goes on, things aren’t looking that great for his journey on The Bachelorette. Unless other contestants make even bigger waves in the next few weeks, his actions will probably come back to bite him.

There have certainly been “villains” that viewers hated to watch but still had to put up with them week after week on the show. However, those examples haven’t been as common in recent seasons of The Bachelorette. With Michelle being so in tune with what’s going on, Martin’s time on her season could be coming to an end.
