Back to the Future Why Marty Never Saw The DeLorean Before (Doc’s Secret Lab)

How did Doc Brown keep a time traveling DeLorean secret from his best friend, Marty McFly, in Back To The Future? When Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic begins, the opening scenes are dedicated towards establishing the friendship between Michael J. Fox’s high school teenager and Christopher Lloyd’s endearing mad scientist. Holding back the story on how they met and glossing over the inherent strangeness of their relationship, it becomes clear that Marty is a regular visitor to Doc’s lab after class, and the title sequence sees Marty try out a mammoth guitar amplifier set up at Doc’s place.

Back To The Future’s story begins proper when Doc, who Marty hasn’t seen for a week, instructs his young friend to meet him at the Twin Pines Mall later that night. In a conversation that has since been indoctrinated into movie legend, Doc Brown reveals that he built a time machine out of a DeLorean and the duo need to take this contraption for a test drive while avoiding a band of angry Libyan terrorists. As anyone would be in his Nike sneakers, Marty is shocked at Doc’s time-bending breakthrough, and even more surprised that journeys through the continuum will be made in such style.

While Marty’s baffled reaction is totally understandable, it does raise the question of how he didn’t already know about the car. The audience can perhaps infer why Doc Brown hadn’t already told Marty – the kid would’ve tried to talk his pal out of tangling with dangerous foreign terrorists – but the how is a little harder to guess at. After all, Marty McFly is someone who seems to have free reign to walk into Doc’s lab as he pleases; how did Emmett Brown keep a custom DeLorean secret from someone so close to him? This is a continuity blip that even Back To The Future writer Bob Gale has acknowledged.

Fortunately, Gale had the opportunity to address this problem in the Back To The Future comic book series alongside comic writer, John Barber. The IDW series continues directly after Back To The Future III when Doc bids farewell to Marty and warps off on the Time Train with his family, and Vol. 2 – Continuum Conundrum sees Marty receive a letter from Clara, Doc’s wife, pleading for help after the scientist went into the future and didn’t return. Marty and Jennifer investigate in 1986 and it’s actually Jennifer who deducts that if Marty didn’t see Emmett building the DeLorean, he must have a secret lab tucked away somewhere. Marty’s girlfriend is proven right when the duo discover a building registered under Doc Brown’s birth name, “Von Braun.” Upon visiting this second, secret facility, Marty and Jennifer discover the remnants of Doc’s time travel experiments, including another DeLorean, albeit one without the vital flux capacitor.

Marty seeing the DeLorean for the first time in the Twin Pines mall parking lot isn’t a plot hole many Back to the Future fans would’ve picked up on in 1985, but the comic book explanation provides a more complete picture of what Doc Brown was up to shortly prior to the first movie. Furthermore, Bob Gale’s involvement in the comic project ensures that Doc Brown’s second lab is entirely canon. Back To The Future fans might not have spent the past 35 years scratching their chins and pondering “how didn’t Marty McFly already know Doc was building a DeLorean time machine,” but future rewatches might feel a little more rounded-out, now that the question has been solved.
