Batman Fans Finally Meet the Demon Ras al Ghul is Named After

Warning: Spoilers for Robin #8!

The iconic Batman villain, Ra’s al Ghul, is one of The Dark Knight’s most versatile and deadly adversaries, and now fans of the character have finally gotten a glimpse of the literal demon that he takes his namesake from. Roughly translating his name to “Head of the Demon,” or simply “Demon’s Head” in the past, seeing the physical embodiment of the al Ghul lineage on-page is a sight worth clamoring over, and further draws attention to the messed-up family that Batman’s son, Damian Wayne aka Robin, hails from.

Seen in full during the final pages of Robin #8, by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov, and Max Dunbar, “the Demon,” as it’s called here, makes a surprise appearance in a way that befits the al Ghul name. With its existence slowly revealed throughout the events of the last couple issues, Ra’s al Ghul’s mother — and Damian Wayne’s great grandmother — Mother Soul, is shown to have started this series’ inciting competition all in the name of powering up Lazarus Island’s demonic entity and bringing it to the land of the living.

Revealing itself following the final fight in the Mortal Kombat-esque tournament which pit Robin against Green Arrow’s estranged son, Hawke, the Demon is summoned after Robin’s neck is snapped by Hawke, giving the creature enough power via his death to allow it to rise from the Lazarus Pit beneath the island. Showing fans what happens when a Lazarus Pit births something instead of resurrects it, this new wrinkle in Lazarus lore is a wild moment that needs to be seen to be believed.

With the rest of the combatants trapped on the island after the fight, Mother Soul explains that “The destiny of this tournament and this island is to feed the pit the deaths it needed to be fully charged. To unleash the demon that sleeps inside,” going on to say that the winner of the tournament, Hawke, will act as host for the demon to no doubt fulfill whatever evil acts she has planned for it. And as Damian is resurrected from death, ready to fight once again, the Lazarus Pit bubbles and explodes, revealing the titular Demon of Ra’s al Ghul’s Demon’s Head moniker, surprising fans and killing Hawke instantly.

Always referred to as the Head of the Demon and even calling his daughter, Talia al Ghul, Daughter of the Demon before, seeing Ra’s namesake in the flesh is a moment a long time coming for this villainous character. And with this series acting as a secret/retconned origin of sorts for Ra’s’ — and Damian’s — lineage, putting a face to Ra’s’ name is a wild turn of events that makes real the idea of what his name has always represented, just in an overly bloody and violent fashion.

So although Hawke has sacrificed his life to give rise to the Demon, seeing this creature in the flesh is only the beginning of what Mother Soul has in store for it. Ra’s al Ghul may have buried the truth of this being for unknown reasons, but it has finally been unleashed on an unsuspecting DC Universe, and what happens next is anyone’s guess.
