Batman V Superman Lex Luthors Painting Explained

Here’s the symbolism of Lex Luthor’s painting in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice explained. Batman is probably the most popular superhero of all time and the character has had a wild journey on the big screen. After years in development hell, his first movie finally arrived in the form of Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989. Batman was a landmark blockbuster and established comic book movies could work on the big screen. Burton and star Michael Keaton exited the franchise following the second movie, while Joel Schumacher’s follow-ups Batman Forever and Batman & Robin proved fairly divisive, with the latter essentially killing the franchise.

Christopher Nolan resurrected the series with his Dark Knight trilogy, bringing weighty themes and a somewhat grounded reality to the character. They also featured a top drawer cast, including Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, and Heath Ledger. Ben Affleck would inherit the cape for 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, the sequel to Superman origin tale Man Of Steel. Like the title implies, the title duo is pitted against each other by villain Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), and the movie marked the first time the two heroes appeared in a film together. While it was supposed to launch DC’s planned shared universe in a huge way, it received an incredibly divisive critical and commercial reception, which led to very well-published issues with follow-up Justice League.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice still has a passionate fanbase, with some feeling it was an ambiguous, dark blockbuster that at least attempted to explore interesting themes. One of the more memorable scenes features a confrontation between Lex and Senator Finch (Holly Hunter) in his mansion, and at the end of the scene, he points to an impressive painting depicting a vivid battle between angels and demons. Lex points out the picture should be displayed upside down, as he feels devils comes from the sky and not from the ground.

This Batman V Superman painting was created for the movie by the art department, but is based on real painting like Gustave Dore’s “The Fall of the Rebel Angels.” Of course, within the story, this picture is heavily symbolic and by the end of the story, it’s revealed Lex did flip it around, with the devils on top and the angels on the ground. With Superman’s death, this shows darkness has prevailed over light, and it also heralds the coming of Darkseid and his Parademons, as seen in Bruce Wayne’s Knightmare sequence of a post-apocalyptic Earth.

Bleak as that sounds, the flipping of the image also implies Superman is now in the ground but will rise again to defeat the demons. This Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice painting is a striking image, and helps outline Lex’s hatred of “angel” Superman coming to save the human race.
