Benedict Cumberbatch Calls Doctor Strange 2s Story Very Busy & Bonkers

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch recently described the story for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as both busy and bonkers. Cumberbatch’s turn as Dr. Stephen Strange has proven to be one of the most important figures of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite only his second solo-film being due for release in May 2022. The character has made significant appearances in six other MCU projects, including the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, which sees him accidentally breaking down the barriers of the multiverse, bringing through Spidey villains from different dimensions to menace Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

It seems natural that the events of No Way Home could directly lead into Multiverse of Madness due to the linking narrative thread of dealing with other dimensions. From the info that has been released so far, the film will see Strange continue his research into the time stone, in spite of its destruction in Avengers: Endgame. It is also confirmed that the film will follow up on the ending of Wandavision with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch being a member of the primary cast. With all of this in mind, it seems the upcoming sequel will have a lot to tackle, as its leading man has seemingly confirmed.

In a recent episode of WTF with Marc Maron which featured Cumberbatch as the guest, the British thespian gave a slight piece of insight as to how stuffed the film really is. In the episode, Maron confirms with Cumberbatch that this film is his movie to which Cumberbatch replies: “Yeah well, that’s part of the problem”. He elaborates that “there’s a lot of stuff going on” and seems to question whether his character has an arc amid the film’s crowded plot. He then clarifies that there’s still great stuff for the character to do and says that the film is “busy” and “bonkers”. Check out the full exchange, below:

Cumberbatch: This is the second one of him on his own.

Maron: So this is your movie.

Cumberbatch: Yeah, well, yeah that’s part of the problem. There’s a lot of stuff going on in it. It’s like, “do I have a character arc in this? Is it working?” There’s great stuff for me to do in it. It’s very busy. It’s called The Multiverse of Madness and it’s bonkers.

Cumberbatch appears to sound exasperated when initially speaking about the film which may be, in part, due to the reportedly heavy reshoots Doctor Strange 2 is currently undergoing, with the rumored six-day weeks naturally taking a toll on even the most seasoned of actors. The film has undergone a turbulent production, with director of the original 2016 film, Scott Derrickson, leaving the project due to creative differences with Marvel Studios. This led to Spider-Man director, Sam Raimi, stepping in to reportedly bring the horror flavor that made his career back with Evil Dead. There have been doubts from fans, however, as to how much of the director’s style will be able to shine through considering all the rumored connections this film may contain.

While Doctor Strange 2 will pick up from the events of WandaVision, fans seem to also expect some crossover with another Disney+ series, Loki, the first season of which laid out multiverse teases of its own with the introduction of variants and the splintering of the sacred timeline. There are also theories that the film may tie-in with What If…?, as the series was focused around the alternate versions of MCU characters scattered through the multiverse, one of which was an all-powerful evil incarnation of Doctor Strange himself. This is not to mention potential crossovers with Marvel characters from pre-MCU films, which was teased with the casting of Evan Peters as Quicksilver in WandaVision and will be followed up on in Spider-Man: No Way Home. With Cumberbatch’s quotes casting doubt on how focused Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be, it is clear that meeting all the expectations of fans will be a herculean task in its own right.
