Actor Benedict Cumberbatch gives each of his roles on the big screen his dedication and commitment, and the Master of the Mystic Arts in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is no exception. Beyond the sheer emotion he put into many of his scenes as Stephen Strange, the actor also showed his commitment through his facial hair.

Talking to co-star Elizabeth Olsen for LADbible TV, Cumberbatch touched on Strange’s look and hinted at the “offensive” appearance of his goatee. He then revealed that, unlike in previous appearances, he actually grew most of the goatee himself for the recently released film, living with it for some time. In his previous appearances as Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch wore a prosthetic goatee, which, according to the actor, limited his facial expressions.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see not one, but several different variants of Stephen Strange, from all across the multiverse. Audiences have seen glimpses of several, including a Zombie Strange and Strange Supreme-esque character in the Marvel Studios film’s many trailers and clips.

Including the recently released film, Cumberbatch has appeared as Doctor Strange in six films, beginning in 2016. Prior to Multiverse of Madness, Strange played an integral role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War. While that is a solid list of appearances for the character, Cumberbatch recently expressed he is not quite finished with the role yet.

In a recent interview, Cumberbatch was asked about whether he could see himself playing the role for the next decade. He said, “If they keep me, and it, interesting and keep him evolving and try to exercise his full potential as a character, I think there’s a lot of places for him to explore. So yeah, bring it on.”

The latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already proved to be a massive success. On its first day in theaters, the film earned over $90 million domestically. Current box office projections suggest it is on track to earn $200 million, which would make it the highest-grossing film so far in 2022. For comparison, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was originally expected to earn approximately $160 million over its opening weekend.
