Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

Marvel has a long history in video games, from side-scrolling arcade cabinets to the blockbuster PS4 exclusive Spider-Man. Within the Marvel universe, there are few heroes more iconic than the Avengers, which have become even more of a household brand with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Avengers are finally getting a video game equivalent to match the film, but the heroes have their own history with video games already. Marvel’s history in games is inexplicably linked to The Avengers.

There are plenty of video games that prominently feature the Avengers, although there are a few that stand out from the pack.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

The Ultimate Alliance games have long been considered some of the best Marvel experiences in video games, and while the first two still hold up well, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 brings a fresh take. Developed by Koei Tecmo, Ultimate Alliance 3 sports a cel-shaded look that gives it much more of a comic book style. The game tells an original story inspired by Infinity War and, of course, The Avengers play a prominent role. The interesting thing about the Ultimate Alliance games is that players get stat bonuses based on their party composition. For example, having Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk will grant players the Original Avengers bonus. Ultimate Alliance 3 has a fantastic roster that features quite a few more recent characters like Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. All three of the Ultimate Alliance games are worth playing, but Ultimate Alliance 3 is a much more recent, and easier to find, title.

Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems

Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

Marvel has a long history in video games and even the Infinity War was featured back on the Super Nintendo. There were quite a few great Marvel games in arcades, and War of the Gems is inspired by the arcade title Marvel Super Heroes. The game has five playable characters, most of whom are Avengers. War of the Gems is a brawler in the style of Streets of Rage, and players can select one of the Infinity Stones to use on each stage. Each stone applies a different effect, like the Soul Stone doubling a character’s health, or the Reality Gem revealing extra items throughout the level.

Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

Marvel Vs. Capcom is the original crossover fighting game, and it’s always been a blast seeing the heroes of Marvel go up against Capcom’s characters. Even after all these years Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes remains the best game in the series, and its roster is part of what makes it so great. The Avengers have been a part of every Marvel vs Capcom game, but New Age of Heroes brought some truly obscure characters into the mix, like Omega Red, Marrow, and Spiral. The team-based combat means players can choose a few of their favorite heroes, and Marvel vs Capcom 2 remains one of the best 2D fighters ever created.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

While there is a LEGO Marvel’s Avengers game, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is by far the superior experience. The game has a massive roster of 180 characters, meaning practically every Avenger players could ever want is featured. Even better is that players can explore open-world versions of New York and Asgard that are packed with little details and Easter Eggs.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes tells an original story that featured the heroes teaming up to stop the schemes of Doctor Doom and Loki. Of course, everything is told using that trademark slapstick LEGO humor. It’s easily one of the best LEGO games out there, but also just a good superhero game in general.

Marvel Future Fight

Best Video Games Featuring The Avengers

There’s a whole host of Marvel games on mobile devices, but Marvel Future Fight brings a lot more to the table than others. Future Fight is a dungeon crawler that features a roster of over 200 characters from across the Marvel universe. As with many mobile titles, the core gameplay loop revolves around gaining currency to unlock new heroes and upgrade them. At the same time, though, Future Fight does tell an original story that involves multiple dimensions collapsing, resulting in players’ teams going up against alternate versions of multiple heroes and villains. Marvel Future Fight falls into some of the same traps as other mobile games, but it has a great gameplay loop and incredible roster for players to keep coming back to.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Ultimate Destruction may not feature the entire Avengers team, but it’s one of the best games out there to focus on a singular Avenger. Before Marvel’s Avengers, Ultimate Destruction was one of the only games that really let players feel the rampant destruction of the Hulk. The open-world game lets players bound over buildings and climb over any surface, and the Hulk can destroy practically any object in the world. The story of Ultimate Destruction starts when Bruce Banner exiles himself to the desert while he tries to find a cure for himself. There are a few villains that appear along the way, including Devil Hulk. Ultimate Destruction completely leans into the character of the Hulk, and it succeeds on almost every front because of it. It’s just a shame that other Avengers like Captain America and Thor haven’t received equally well thought out solo games.
