As Bill Murray turns 70, he shows no signs of disappearing from our screens any time soon. The versatile actor has been entertaining us since the 1970s when he was part of an improvisational comedy troupe. He moved to Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s and then began to work in movies. In the 1980s his star began to rise after appearances in Caddyshack, Stripes, and Tootsie. However, it was 1984’s Ghostbusters that really thrust him into the spotlight.

Over the years, Murray has made his name as a comedy actor, but in the early 2000s, he began to take on more dramatic roles. These included parts in Wild Things, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Lost In Translation. He has also continued to act in comedy roles and has given us some of the very best comedic moments in cinema. 9 Kingpin: Ernie’s Bowling Style

In Kingpin, Bill Murray plays Ernie McCracken, a flamboyant bowler, and nemesis of Woody Harrelson’s Roy Munson. The dynamic between the pair is fantastic to watch but Murray really shines when Ernie takes to the lanes.

From his ridiculously OTT bowling bowl with a red rose embedded in the middle, to his outlandish costume and his unique style, everything is perfectly timed and incredibly funny. When this man bowls you’ll be too busy laughing to notice the scores.

8 Stripes: Anything Surrounding The Graduation

This early Bill Murray and Harold Ramis collaboration is comedy gold. Stripes is packed full of witty, well-delivered lines as the two talents riff off each other. One of the highlights of the movie is the graduation scene but really anything surrounding the graduation will make you laugh.

From Ramis’ reassurance that “three hours is plenty of time”, to Murray’s “we were stupid enough to enlist in the army” speech, everything comes together perfectly with the timing and editing of the shots creating some truly memorable moments.

7 Ghostbusters: “We Came, We Saw, We Kicked Its Ass”

Ghostbusters is one of Bill Murray’s best-known movies and sees him star alongside writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It features so many classic comedy moments but one of the best is just after the team captures their first ghost.

All their equipment is experimental and they keep causing damage and making huge amounts of noise as they “discreetly” deal with the ghost in a local hotel. The journey of capturing the specter is funny from start to end but it summed up when the trio comes bursting through the door, covered in slime with a wake of damage behind them with Murray proudly proclaiming “we came, we saw, we kicked its ass!”

6 Scrooged: The Ghost Of Christmas Present

In Scrooged, Bill Murray plays tv executive Frank Cross who is putting on a very unconventional production of A Christmas Carol when he gets visited by his very own trio of zany ghosts. While the movie is full of stupid ideas like TV programs for cats, and crazy decisions Murray’s character makes, including revealing costumes in his show, one of the highlights is the chemistry between Murray and Carol Kane.

Kane is the ghost of Christmas present and the interactions between the pair are often full of slapstick comedy as well as stupidity, perfect comedic timing, and zany dialogue. These interactions show both actor’s skills and make us laugh every time.

5 Get Smart: Cameo

Murray has a cameo as Agent 13 in Get Smart and it’s played to perfection. He steals the show when Steve Carell’s Max Smart realizes that the tree he is approaching contains Bill Murray, who is going “old school” by hiding in a tree to take directions since the communications are out.

He sounds quite desperate as he manages to pull the audience’s attention with just 30 seconds of being inside a tree with only his face visible. His expressions say everything and the results are hilarious.

4 Caddyshack: “How About A Nice Cool Drink?”

Bill Murray is known for physical comedy as much as witty lines and this classic scene in Caddyshack is one of the earliest examples. In it, he starts to talk to the gophers as he tries to clear them off the golf course. Thinking he can flush them out with a hose he offers them “a nice cool drink.”

Murray’s tangle with the pests showcases not just his comic timing but also his ability to act alongside non-humans. Despite the fact that the gopher’s look absolutely terrible, the scenes between Murray and his furry nemesis are very funny and perfectly executed.

3 The Royal Tenenbaums: “I’m Not Color Blind Am I?”

In The Royal Tenenbaums, Bill Murray plays psychiatrist Raleigh St. Clair. The movie is a comedy-drama and tests Murray in different ways. Here the key to the humor is deadpan delivery and he’s got it down from the start.

There are many great scenes in the movie but one which shows his comic timing to perfection is when he’s talking about a client who has exceptional hearing as well as a host of other issues. As we see the client in the next room, the timing is perfect as St. Clair pauses to answer his client’s question about what he just said before he mentioned the hearing.

2 Groundhog Day – Kidnapping The Groundhog

Groundhog Day is a classic romantic comedy that sees Murray star as Phil, a reporter who gets trapped in a time loop where the same day keeps repeating over and over again. Murray plays the part to perfection of a man realizing that he can do whatever he wants with no consequences.

There are moments of hilarity and touching gestures as he learns things, tests people’s responses, and tries to build a relationship with a woman he meets. However, one of the comedic highlights is the day he inevitably goes slightly insane. On this loop around he is so fed up with Groundhog Day that he kidnaps the groundhog.

1 Zombieland: Cameo

Bill Murray’s Zombieland cameo is perfection. He appears as himself and dresses as a zombie as a practical joke. He is only on screen for a few short minutes but his death is far funnier than you’d expect and his regrets are perfect.

He even gets a gun salute of honor before his body is unceremoniously disposed of. It may not be his longest cameo but it’s one of his funniest, especially with how he interacts with the rest of the cast.
