Black Cat Replaces a Furious Mary Jane in Hilarious New Cover

A new cover from Marvel Comics features Black Cat and Mary Jane Watson at odds with one another. Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1 will turn MJ into a superheroine, having to save Black Cat. A variant cover for the issue suggests MJ may not be looking forward to the task, as the two could once more be at odds.

Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy have long competed for Peter Parker’s heart. He has been involved with them both, though he has most recently gotten back together with MJ. Peter has spent the past several issues of his Beyond era titles in a coma, but the women in his life have refused to give up on him. Felicia Hardy showed up to check in on him and he briefly opened his eyes before shutting them again. Though it may later cause some tension to rise between the two love, Mary Jane is currently more concerned with Peter’s health, accepting anything that will wake him up.

The newly revealed variant cover for Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1 features the two titular heroines. The cover art is illustrated by Adam Hughes, who recently shared it to Twitter. On the cover, Black Cat is stealing Mary Jane’s infamous line that debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #42 (1966). That issue had the creative team of Stan Lee, John Romita, and Sam Rosen. It was the first full appearance of Mary Jane Watson as Peter finally met the girl his aunt was trying to set him up with. She debuted with the iconic line, “Face it, tiger… you just hit the jackpot!” Now, this line is making the rounds again. This time it is on the variant cover of the first issue, from the creative team of Jed Mackay and C. F. Villa.

Hughes’ cover art pays homage to Mary Jane’s debut in a humorous way, though this isn’t the first time Black Cat has stolen it. She also stole the line back in 1990 in What If…? #20. In the first issue of What If…? where the story carried over multiple issues, the narrative focused on the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. It had the creative team of Danny Fingeroth, Jim Valentino, Chris Ivy, Nel Yomtov, and Janice Chiang. To protect Mary Jane from the danger of his life as Spider-Man, Peter left her at the altar and ended their relationship. He would then date (and marry!) Black Cat, who shows up at his apartment using Mary Jane’s classic line. This line has also appeared in countless other comics as a humorous reference, as well as in numerous Spider-Man comics over the years.

This new cover is not for a What If…? story, but Peter’s condition and response to both women will definitely raise some questions about what’s to come for the Web-Slinger’s love life. The synopsis for Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1 reveals that Black Cat will need to be rescued by Mary Jane, while suggesting that there may be more to the situation than meets the eye. For a long time, Mary Jane has simply been along for the ride, making this upcoming concept a highly intriguing one. She and Peter’s past love interests haven’t always seen eye-to-eye, either. The upcoming issue will certainly be one fans will want to catch, if only to see the claws come out between MJ and Felicia. Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1 releases January 26.
