Season six of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has added a lot of new content with the game’s final battle-pass season before the focus moves to Call of Duty: Vanguard. Season six included new multiplayer maps, weapons, operators, and changes to Call of Duty: Warzone. For fans of the zombies game mode, Black Ops Cold War’s final season also saw the arrival of the final round-based zombies map: Forsaken, which will wrap up the Black Ops Cold War Zombies story.

So far, zombies players have been fighting off the undead in an attempt to stop outbreaks from The Dark Aether causing havoc across the world. With the addition of Forsaken, there are now four round-based zombies maps. Each of these maps contains a questline completed by completing missions throughout the map. There are also eight regions in the Outbreak mode, which contains two story quests to complete.

The Dark Aether story is set during the cold war. In 1983, KGB Chairman Viktor Chebrikov ordered the reactivation of Omega Group, a special Spetsnaz unit led by Colonel Lev Kravchenko. Kravchenko was asked to head Operation Baldr, which began in 1944 with the aim to harness the power of the Dark Aether to ensure the victory of the Third Reich.

Kravchenko is brought film reels from an old Nazi science base, Projekt Endstation, by Doctor Aleksandra Valentina. These film reels show the history of Operation Baldr and Omega Group are ordered to go to Endstation and harness the Dark Aether’s power. Endstation was overseen by Valentina and Doctor William Peck, and on November 1st, 1983 the Cyclotron was activated which caused Outbreak Zones to appear around the world.

With the Outbreak Zones causing havoc, President Ronald Reagan tasked the CIA to find a “proportional response” to the situation while also containing and suppressing the threat. On November 5th, the CIA “Office of Requiem” was created. The four departments of Requiem were headed by Special Operations Officer Grigori Weaver, Major Mackenzie Carver, Doctor Elizabeth Grey, and Doctor Oskar Strauss, a former member of Projekt Endstation, who joined the United States after the war.

Weaver is contacted by German Intelligence agent Samantha Maxis, telling him to look at stolen footage of Omega’s work at Endstation. This is where the story begins for the player, who operates as a strike team on Operation Cerberus. In the Call of Duty map Die Maschine, Requiem travels into the Dark Aether to try and shut down the Cyclotron to stop the outbreak zones from appearing.

During the mission, the Strike Team found a modified computer where a stranger made contact with them and retold his journey in the Dark Aether and the dangers present in this dimension. The Strike Team then manages to partially resurrect Orlov, an Omega Officer, who assists them in shutting down the Cyclotron. Once shut down, Orlov stays behind to make sure Projekt Endstation is destroyed. Despite the success of Operation Cerberus, Outbreak Zones start appearing again two months later.

Omega group later set up a base in Vietnam, Outpost 25, which is the setting of the second Call of Duty zombies map Firebase Z. In Outpost 25, Omega created a stable rift to the Aether and are gathering resources from it. Doctor Peck creates designs for weapons and machines fueled by Aether crystals, including reactors that power the Outpost. Meanwhile, Maxis is working with Sergei Ravenov, an Omega worker who starts working for Maxis once he sees Omega’s horrible experiments. Peck manages to capture Maxis however and tortures her before throwing her into the Dark Aether. On June 15th, 1984, there is a dimensional breach at Outpost 25, Peck survives by hiding in a safe room, and Ravenov waits in a nearby village.

This is where Call of Duty’s Firebase Z begins, with the Requiem strike team being tasked to control the outbreak and find Maxis. Players meet with Ravenov who instructs them to use the teleporters, activate the reactors in the Outpost to find Maxis. Upon arrival, Peck strikes a bargain with Requiem to get him out and he will hand them to Maxis. Requiem creates a truth serum and uses it on Peck who reveals Maxis is trapped in the Dark Aether. Peck tricks Requiem into destroying the power in the outpost and the rift to the Aether; he then escapes with his research back to Omega. The team uses Requiem’s Dimensional Disruptor satellite to open a new breach allowing Maxis to escape. The team and Maxis managed to leave the facility and regrouped with Ravenov. Suddenly, a massive Orda appeared in the village but was neutralized by the team, who fled the area.

Call of Duty Zombies: Outbreak Story

The two Outbreak easter eggs are less linear but do continue the story of Call of Duty Zombies. In the first easter egg, the Requiem Strike Team is contacted by Maxis via radios throughout the regions over a secret communication line she has set up. Maxis instructs the team to help Ravenov launch Reality Inversion warheads controlled by Omega into the sea. The team successfully destroy aetherium crystals and defeat a giant Tempest which allowed the missiles to be launched.

In the second Outbreak easter egg, the Requiem Strike team is instructed to meet Ravenov and eight Omega scientists who have defected to Requiem. When they arrive, they learn one of the scientists was placed by Omega to sabotage the mission. The Strike Team battles a horde of zombies and an Orda, but as they are about to exfil they are shot down by Omega and captured by Kravchenko.

Mauer Der Toten’s Call of Duty Zombies Story

Call of Duty’s Zombie story resumes in the third map, Mauer Der Toten in January 1985. Omega group learns that Doctor Valentina is the daughter of Ulrich Vogel, the scientist who began Projekt Endstation. Valentina was being controlled by the Forsaken and has recently left Omega and gone into hiding in Berlin, trying to open a portal to the Dark Aether. An outbreak zone occurs at a Berlin Wall checkpoint, and the surrounding area is evacuated. Kravchenko then sends the Strike Team he captured in the outbreak zone to stop Valentina. Once dropped in Berlin, the player has to work with Omega to create a new Reality Inversion warhead to close the portal. Valentina is discovered in an underground Endstation base, her body no longer human but made of crystals.

The strike team defeats Valentina, then attaches her to the conversion machine built by her father. The machine kills her and her energy refines the essence in the Warhead, making it ready to destroy the portal. The strike team gave the warhead to the robot Klaus, which had helped them to locate Valentina during the mission. Klaus carries the Warhead into the portal, destroying it and ending the threat. The strike team returns to the surface, where Kravchenko told them he would release them and their pilot Raptor One. Before they leave, Kravchenko attacks the strike team, but Maxis contacts them and opens a portal on a roof, thereby allowing the Strike Team to escape. Kravchenko returns to the KGB, lying about the Strike Team’s method to defeat Valentina, and says they were executed before he left.

Call of Duty Zombies: The Final Mission

That is the story so far in Black Ops Cold War Zombies. Throughout the maps, the Dark Aether has become a much greater threat, and Omega group is insistent on harnessing its powers regardless of how much danger it threatens. As Requiem’s Strike Team continues to halt Omega and the Dark Aether, Maxis is becoming increasingly more powerful and important in saving the world.

“Forsaken” will be the final map added to Zombies in Black Ops Cold War, and it is likely that it will conclude the stories of Requiem and Omega. Whatever happens in Forsaken, it will not be the end of the Dark Aether story and fans will not have to wait for the next Treyarch game to find out what happens next. Call of Duty: Vanguard, developed by Sledgehammer Games, will feature its own Zombies mode developed separately by Treyarch, where the Dark Aether story will continue.
