Actor Martin Freeman will reprise his Marvel Cinematic Universe role as CIA Agent Everett Ross for Black Panther 2, though he’s still in the dark about the movie’s plot.

“Yeah, I am doing the second Black Panther,” Freeman told Collider. “I’m going to be speaking to Ryan Coogler soon about what shape that’s going to look like.” Freeman added, “I have no idea about the script [so] I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

In addition to confirming his role in Black Panther’s sequel, Freeman disclosed his thoughts about the franchise’s future after Chadwick Boseman’s passing from stage IV colon cancer last year. “Just before Chadwick died, if my memory serves correctly, the script had gone in,” the actor said. “They had the script and they were working on the script, and then Chadwick died, and [I] sort of immediately thought, ‘Oh, okay, I could see a world where there’s no Black Panther then, because how can you do a Black Panther without Black Panther?'”

The actor continued, “So, I still don’t know what that’s going to look like. And no, obviously, before Chad died, the idea of doing it without him would have been a stupid idea. It would have been crazy. It was very shocking and still is very, very strange, that he is not here. So, I’m as curious as you are to see what that will look like and I find out quite soon.” He concluded with the note, “All I know is that I’m in it.”

Freeman first played the bureaucratic Everett Ross in Captain America: Civil War, where he oversaw the detaining of Bucky Barnes and, at the end of the film, Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl). Ross would later reappear in Black Panther with a more prominent story role, initially working undercover to locate Ulysses Klaw’s (Andy Serkis) Vibranium supplier but, after being wounded during Killmonger’s (Michael B. Jordan) jailbreak attack, was taken to Wakanda for treatment. From there, he assisted T’Challa’s family and allies in foiling Killmonger’s plan, using one of Wakanda’s airships to shoot down other ships carrying Vibranium weapons before they could cross the Wakandan border.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther 2 arrives in theaters July 8, 2022.
