Bleach Manga Unveils Terrifying Truth of Gruesome Soul Society Ritual

Warning: contain spoilers for Bleach

The recently released Bleach one-shot just unveiled an ancient Social Society ritual called Konso Reisai that never appeared in the original series. At first, the ceremony’s only fault seemed to be its inherent barbarism, but the Shinigami later discover the terrifying truth of the Konso Reisai from a slain Arrancar who emerges from hell to impart the gruesome details.

The majority of the new Bleach manga centers on the preparation of the Konso Reisai. Ichigo, who’s living on Earth as a translator, learns about the ceremony from Captain Renji who invites him to attend. According to Renji, the Konso Reisai involves sacrificing Hollows in front of the graves of fallen captains who died 12 years ago. Assistant captains are tasked with gathering the ritual’s sacrifices but are not allowed to participate in the actual ceremony as it’s traditionally restricted to captains. This particular ceremony will be for Jushiro Ukitake, former captain of the 13th Division.

As a group of assistant captains, in addition to Renji and Ichigo, gather together to start the preparations for the upcoming event, a group of Hollows without spiritual energy ambush the proceedings. The Shinigami are able to quickly dispose of the sudden threat, but their troubles are far from over. The Arrancar Szayelaporro Granz who was originally slain by Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi during the original series emerges from hell shortly thereafter to impart the horrific truth about the Konso Reisai: The ritual actually casts the souls of the fallen captains into hell. Worst of all, the Hollows that the Shinigami had just slain actually served as the sacrifice for the upcoming ritual because, unbeknownst to them, Szayelaporro had somehow acquired the body of the fallen Jushiro Ukitake so that the killings of the Hollows from earlier occurred before his corpse to serve as part of the ceremony that requires the sacrifices to be made in front of the fallen’s grave.

Before the Shinigami from Bleach become unwitting participants in Jushiro Ukitake’s damnation, Captain Shunsui Sakuranosuke Jirō Kyōraku of the 1st Division explains the sudden appearance of phosphoplasm from hell to his fellow captains who are located far from Szayelaporro. He reveals that powerful Shinigami such as captains are composed of a higher amount of Reishi that creates a high spiritual pressure too dense to be reclaimed by the soil of Soul Society upon their death. The Konso Reisai, he continues, was originally believed to allow their Reishi to finally rest. But there was an old wives’ tale that suggested their Reishi could never return to the soil even with the Konso Reisai. Because their souls couldn’t just linger, the ceremony was meant to send them to the only other place: Hell. The appearance of the phosphoplasm seemed to confirm this truth.

Later on, readers understandably became more fixated on Szayelaporro’s words regarding the release of Sosuke Aizen and Yhwach, the slain Father of the Quincy. Although this promises these villains could serve as major antagonists in a possible future series, the manga also suggests that a likely plot could involve the Shinigami venturing into hell to save the souls of the captains they inadvertently damned as part of the Konso Reisai should this one-shot result in a relaunch of Bleach. A journey into hell would be a welcome change from another invasion of Hueco Mundo even after all of these years.
