Boost Mobiles New Plans Make Sure You Only Pay For The Data You Use

Boost Mobile is introducing new low-data smartphone plans at affordable prices. Boost and other prepaid MVNO providers have always been an affordable option compared to postpaid carriers who typically only offer unlimited or pricy tiered data plans. There are some downsides to postpaid plans, however, such as the inability to finance devices direct from the carrier.

Prepaid carriers also typically have lower priority on the network compared to postpaid users on the same network. Likewise, while some do offer unlimited data plans, they can come with speed caps. This varies greatly by location, as a network is less likely to get hit with congestion in smaller communities and less dense areas. The bigger question is usually coverage, as congestion and speed tend not to matter much when the coverage isn’t there.

Boost Mobile’s new plans seem to offer a combination of price and performance, and are directly aiming at less data-hungry customers. Billed annually, users can expect unlimited calls and texts with 1GB of monthly data for $100, or roughly $8.33 per month. For $240 each year, Boost is also offering unlimited calls, texts, and 15GB each month. That breaks down to only $20 per month. Speaking of which, for those that prefer monthly billing, Boost offers $25 and $15 plans that provide 5GB and 2GB of data respectively. Those plans also come with unlimited calling and texting. In terms of coverage, Boost will be piggybacking off of AT&T’s network going forward.

Major Cost Savings For Consumers

Whether constantly on Wi-Fi or just generally consuming less data each month, these plans look like great options for low-data users. While the big carriers are constantly pushing unlimited data plans to consumers, only 15-percent of Boost Mobile users “consume over 10 GB of data per month,” according to Boost Mobile’s CEO Stephen Stokols. For the other 85-percent, these new plans have the potential to substantially reduce monthly and yearly costs. In comparison, the average cost of the cheapest postpaid unlimited plan from the big carriers is around $70. That’s per month, not yearly. There are a few benefits to postpaid plans such as higher priority on the network, zero-percent device financing over a few years, and additional incentives like free streaming services.

It’s worth noting that these basic unlimited postpaid plans typically have no high-speed data buckets, compared to Boost’s plans which, at bare minimum, offer 1GB of high-speed data before getting throttled. There’s a bit of intentional confusion there, though. Boost’s plans have high speeds data buckets (again, minimum of 1GB), but Boost “will” throttle immediately after that bucket is depleted. Postpaid unlimited plans from smartphone carriers “may” throttle based on network congestion, depending on the location and carrier.
