The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most positively reviewed games of the last decade, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next entry in the franchise. Two trailers have been released for Breath of the Wild 2 since the game was announced at E3 2019, but Nintendo has kept details about plot and gameplay under wraps.

Despite the lack of confirmed information about the anticipated sequel, long-time fans of the franchise have broken down every frame of the released footage and made predictions about what they think Link’s next adventure will entail. While some fan theories may seem far-fetched, a number of them seem much more likely to be true.

10 Time Travel Will Play A Role In Breath Of The Wild 2’s Plot

The 2021 E3 trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 contains multiple direct examples of temporal manipulation. First, a brief clip shows enemies rolling a spiked ball towards the hero of Hyrule, but, instead of dodging it, Link freezes it. He’s then able to reverse time and send the ball rolling back towards the bad guys.

A puddle is shown later in the trailer. This puddle then retracts into a droplet and lifts off the ground. The very next shot is Link seemingly reversing his motion to fall up a ledge. It’s not clear if the game’s plot will focus on time travel, but it’s evident that manipulating time will be an important part of gameplay.

9 Ganon Might Be Breath of the Wild 2’s Protagonist

Ganon might be Link’s most established nemesis, but a popular fan theory suggests that the long-time villain may actually be a protagonist for part of Breath of the Wild 2. In the E3 2021 trailer, the playable character, who most have assumed is Link, is seen wearing a green, one-shouldered tunic. This tunic bears a strong resemblance to a tunic seen on Ganondorf earlier in the trailer.

Furthermore, this attire matches an artistic interpretation of Ganonford from the first Breath of the Wild game. Another point brought up by supporters of this theory is that the trailer never shows the playable character’s face. This has led some fans to believe that a human-looking, pre-evil Ganondorf will be playable for at least portions of the game.

8 Breath of the Wild 2 Will Revisit Skyloft

In the similarly designed game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Link is seen partaking in a massive jump from an island in the sky towards the main surface. Breath of the Wild 2’s E3 2021 trailer also shows the playable character falling through the sky towards a floating landmass.

Many fans speculate that this parallel is intentional and that the scene is an inversion of the one from Skyward Sword. Furthermore, it’s possible that the floating island is the same location, Skyloft, that Skyward Sword begins in. With thousands of years having passed between the two games, it makes sense that the island in the sky doesn’t look exactly the same as it did the last time players were there.

7 Astor Will Be (Part Of) The Main Villain In Breath Of The Wild 2

Breath of the Wild 2’s first trailer, which was shown back at E3 2009, showed Link and Zelda exploring a cave and finding a creepy mummy that animates in their presence. Some fans have assumed that this body is the Breath of the Wild antagonist Ganondorf, but one fan theory predicts that the mummy is actually Astor (at least in part).

First introduced in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Astor is a sorcerer that attempted to use Ganon to destroy Hyrule. Astor is combined with Harbinger Ganon and becomes Calamity Ganon, one of the toughest bosses in Age of Calamity. This powerful villain form shares its red hair, jewelry, and glowing eyes with the mummy seen in the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer.

6 Link Will Lose His Arm

In the original E3 2019 trailer for Breath of the Wild 2, Link is seen shooting green energy from his hand/arm. The E3 2021 trailer expanded on this and showed even more powers seeming to emanate from the odd device where Link’s arm should be. While it’s possible that the device is just a large glove, Nintendo has previously shown that’s it’s considered removing one of Link’s arms.

Previously released concept art for the original Breath of the Wild showed an older Link whose right arm was replaced with a shape-shifting weapon. While this didn’t make it into that game, it’s possible that Nintendo has saved the idea for the sequel.

5 Breath Of The Wild 2Will Feature The Zonai Tribe

The Zonai are not present in Breath of the Wild, but players can see the ruins of this ancient civilization spread across the game map. Since Breath of the Wild 2 is likely to deal with time travel and split timelines, it’s possible that this long-gone group of beings may be seen in the flesh for the first time.

According to in-game lore, the Zonai were extremely powerful users of magic. This may tie into the bevy of new and powerful abilities that Link is seen using in the game’s E3 2021 trailer.

4 Breath of the Wild 2 Will Focus More On Dungeons

Dungeons have always been important in the Legend of Zelda franchise. Traditionally, as players would earn new weapons and tools, Link would have to make his way through a closed dungeon that took advantage of the new gameplay options available to the player.

This was largely abandoned in the original Breath of the Wild. While little is known about the map and narrative progression system that will be present in Breath of the Wild 2, fans are hoping that the caves and cave entrances shown in the two released trailers are hints that dungeons will be returning.

3 Zelda Will Not Be Playable In Breath Of The Wild 2

The first trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 showed Link and Zelda exploring a cave together. Many fans believe that this is a hint that Zelda will be playable, but others don’t believe that this will happen. These fans cite a flashback memory in the original Breath of the Wild in which Link has been rendered unable to fight and Zelda unleashes a powerful blast of energy that completely destroys every enemy caught within.

Since Zelda should have full access to her powers again in Breath of the Wild 2, the only ways to make her even slightly balanced would be to significantly nerf her abilities or take them away again. Both options seem to be a disservice to Zelda.

2 Weapons Will Last Longer In Breath Of The Wild 2

While Breath of the Wild was incredibly well-received by both fans and critics, one element that many players are hoping changes in the sequel is how quickly weapons break. It’s unlikely that Breath of the Wild 2 will completely abandon the weapon-degradation system, but it can still be improved.

One option would be to simply have weapons last longer before breaking. Alternatively, players could have the ability to either repair broken weapons or craft upgrades to mitigate wear. Addressing this common fan complaint would minimize the biggest criticism about one of the best adventure games on the Nintendo Switch.

1 Breath of the Wild 2 Will Have More Enemy Types

The first Breath of the Wild was complimented for its engaging combat, but one complaint that many fans have is that there weren’t enough different enemy types to fight. While this relative shortage can be forgiven in the name of how many new elements Breath of the Wild introduced to the franchise, fans predict that the sequel will be able to bring back a more diverse mix of foes for Link to take down. With the game potentially revisiting areas from previous franchise entries, it’s possible that players may see old fan-favorites return to combat alongside new creations.
