Chuuya Nakahara is a mafia executive of Port Mafia who has one of the strongest abilities in Bungo Stray Dogs. He also has a long history with Osamu Dazai, mostly called Dazai, as they used to be partners within the mafia who were known as the infamous Twin Dark. Although he is part of Port Mafia, he knows when to stop a fight, although he can also get his hands dirty.

Chuuya is the main character for the first half of the third season where the fans learn about his past as well as his relationship with Dazai. Here are ten things you didn’t know about Chuuya Nakahara.

10 He Is A Taurus

Chuuya is under the Taurus zodiac sign which is a star sign famous for their practical and stubborn personalities. Tauruses are also known to be grounded, as in having a level-head, but that sometimes seems to be the opposite for Chuuya. Whenever Dazai is around, he becomes extremely irritated and cannot control his emotions.

However, when Dazai is not around, he can keep a calm head and observe things calmly, as a mafioso should.

9 He Hates Betrayal

This is one of the reasons why Chuuya hates Dazai so much. Back in the day, Chuuya and Dazai did not get along that well either, but their relationship was at least cordial. This is because they were both part of Port Mafia and partners within the organization.

However, Dazai betrayed the Port Mafia and joined the Armed Detective Agency, Chuuya resents him as a traitor and wishes to kill him because of this. He also hates how Dazai is the only one able to hand his true ability without dying.

8 He’s A Lightweight

No matter how small Chuuya is compared to the other characters, he is a 22-year-old adult who can drink. However, no matter if he enjoys drinking alcohol, he becomes intoxicated without effort when drinking liquor.

This is hinted at in the 37th chapter of the Bungo Stray Dogs manga. While this is never explicitly stated, his weight at 132 pounds may factor in him not being able to hold his alcohol.

7 He Smokes Sometimes

This was a fact in the Bungo Stray Dogs manga as an extra in volume 4. Chuuya is a temperamental executive in Port Mafia, so he has a lot of sources for stress.

When factoring in Dazai and his hatred at the sight of him, that triples his anger and stress. While some characters, including Chuuya sometimes, resort to smoking to alleviate stress, he does not smoke all the time. No matter how upset or stressed he becomes, he only smokes on rare occasions.

6 He Used To Be A Delinquent

The fans learn more about Chuuya and his past, along with his relationship with Dazai, in the third season of Bungo Stray Dogs. Before he joined as one of the five executives in Port Mafia, he was a part of a group called Sheep as a council member.

It was a group composed of children from the slums who went against who they thought to be “bad guys” before he was betrayed by them.

5 He Rarely Takes Peoples’ Lives For Granted

Although Chuuya is a member of Port Mafia, he is not as cruel as Ryuunosuke Akutagawa or even the Dark Era version of Osamu Dazai. Although he will fight anyone without mercy if they are an enemy, he refrains from being brutal when killing a foe.

The most pivotal example is during the Dark Era when Dazai killed an enemy and continued to shoot him after he was dead. Chuuya stopped Dazai from degrading his body any longer and told him it wasn’t right to disrespect the dead, no matter how they lived.

4 He Only Removes His Gloves At Certain Times

This is a code Chuuya lives by, akin to how Doppo Kunidida lives his life by the ideals written in his notebook. During what happened during the Dark Era, Chuuya dealt with something that made him make a promise to himself as a sort of restraint, he promised himself he would never remove his gloves.

This is because he thought if he ever had to fight someone by removing his gloves, the fight would no longer be enjoyable.

3 His Hat Was An Entry Gift When He Joined Port Mafia

Chuuya likes hats. Although he is only seen wearing one hat during Bungo Stray Dogs, there is a reason why he loves his fedora so much. The fedora is the hat of Arthur Rimbaud, a man who tried to kill Chuuya before he joined Port Mafia.

After he joins Port Mafia, he receives his hat as an entry gift and a sign of loyalty from Ougai Mori. He takes excellent care of it, even going to the extent of not making it fall with his gravitation ability, and always wears it.

2 He Is Short Because Of His Use Of Ability At A Young Age

One of the things that gets on Chuuya’s nerves is how small he is in the world of Bungo Stray Dogs. Although he is 22-years-old, he stands at the height of 5’3″. To put his small height in perspective, Osamu Dazai is 5’11” and Atsushi Nakajima is 5’6″ at 18-years-old.

However, instances of using his true destructive ability, Corruption and For The Tainted Sorrow, may have stunted his growth, as it deals with gravity.

1 A Calamitous God Is Sealed Inside Of Him

Although Chuuya has the ability For The Tainted Sorrow that allows him to use gravity-manipulation, this is not the true form of his ability. His ability is called Corruption, and it allows Chuuya to manipulate the gravitations in his surroundings and he can shoot balls of compressed gravity. However, he cannot control his ability as Chuuya is the entity Arahabaki, the God of Calamity sealed by the Japanese government. Chuuya can only activate this ability by removing his gloves and stating a verse:

“Oh, grantors of dark disgrace,

(Nanji, in utsu naru odaku no kyoyou yo,)

do not wake me again.

(aratamete ware wo me samasu koto nakare.)”
