Cats Cast IRL Vs In The Movie

Once upon a time, Andrew Lloyd Webber created a musical called Cats, which is actually based on a collection of poetry by T. S. Eliot titled Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. And in 2019, this popular story came to the big screen. It was directed by Tom Hooper, who did Les Misérables, and it starred big names like Judi Dench, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift and Ian McKellen.

The CGI and the overall story (or lack thereof) have led to many negative reviews of this film. And speaking of those special effects… Let’s take a look at the cast of Cats and what these actors and actresses look like in real life!

10 James Corden as Bustopher Jones

James Corden is an actor and comedian, as well as the host of The Late Late Show with James Corden. Some of his most notable roles, when it comes to films and TV shows, include voicing characters on animated flicks like Trolls, The Emoji Movie, and Peter Rabbit.

And in Cats, he played Bustopher Jones, a grand cat who likes to live life to the fullest and who likes to eat all the leftovers and scraps from restaurants around town.

9 Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy

Due to her work, she has received an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Tony, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four BAFTA Awards.

In this musical movie, she was Old Deuteronomy, the leader of the Jellicle Tribe. In the play, this character was a male, yet both portrayals showed this cat to be wise and respected.

8 Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger

Jason Derulo is a singer known for songs like Talk Dirty, In My Head and Whatcha Say, and his musical career has led to eleven platinum singles.

Music was a big part of his role in Cats, as well, since he portrayed Rum Tum Tugger. This cat is described as the rock star of the group, with a wild style and attitude that his peers either swoon over or seem to be annoyed by.

7 Idris Elba as Macavity the Mystery Cat

Idris Elba acts, writes, produces and is a DJ. He has appeared in television series like The Wire and Luther and in films like Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, American Gangster, Prometheus, Thor, Pacific Rim and The Jungle Book.

His character in this movie, Macavity, was the antagonist, as he kidnaps those who want to be the Jellicle Choice, including Old Deuteronomy, with his magic.

6 Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella the Glamour Cat

Jennifer Hudson was a finalist on American Idol in 2004, and since then, she has been making music and acting in things like Sing, Hairspray Live, and Dreamgirls (she won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild Award for that role).

In Cats, she played Grizabella, who used to be this glamorous cat yet ended up exiled and disgraced. Things turn around for this character, though, and she is even the one who sings the iconic song Memory!

5 Ian McKellen as Gus “Asparagus” the Theatre Cat

Sir Ian McKellen is also known Shakespearean plays, his many awards and parts in famous films like Richard III, The Da Vinci Code, X-Men movies, Beauty and the Beast and The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

His character in this film, Gus, liked to talk about the olden days, when he acted in the theatre. Yes, this was a fitting part for McKellen, considering all of his past work!

Taylor Swift is a super famous singer who started out in country, with songs like Our Song and Love Story, and moved to pop, with songs like Shake It Off and Look What You Made Me Do. She has also been in films like Valentine’s Day, The Lorax and The Giver.

In Cats, she portrayed Bombalurina, a sensual character who sang a little tune about Macavity the Mystery Cat. Given the fact that this star loves felines and has had pet cats, it was fun to see her become one in this musical (even if there were not that many positive reviews, overall)!

3 Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots the Gumbie Cat

Rebel Wilson’s most known roles have been in the rom-com Bridesmaids and in the Pitch Perfect film series, though she also appeared in an array of other works, such as What to Expect When You’re Expecting and The Hustle, to name a few.

In this movie, she portrayed Jennyanydots, a cat who likes to sit at home eating, crocheting and teaching mice and cockroaches musical numbers, of course.

2 Francesca Hayward as Victoria the White Cat

Francesca Hayward is an English ballerina who is part of the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in London. To be in this movie, she took a temporary leave of absence from the group.

Her part was to play Victoria, a young cat who must learn about this new world and this new group. And it was a pretty big part, as she even sang Beautiful Ghosts, the song that Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote together for this film.

1 Laurie Davidson as Mr. Mistoffelees

Laurie Davidson played young William Shakespeare in the show Will and has been in films such as Vampire Academy and The Good Liar.

In Cats, he was Mr. Mistoffelees, a magician cat with black and white fur who got the confidence he needed in just the right way and at just the right time, as he saved the day and helped in getting this story a happy ending!
