Marvel has announced that legendary Marvel Comic writer and X-Men wordsmith/architect Chris Claremont will be returning to the X-Men with a solo series featuring everyone’s favorite smart-mouthed Southern hero Gambit. While very few details have been released about Claremont’s return to the world of X-Men, Marvel did announce that Claremont would be teaming up artist Sid Kotian for the series which is set to debut in 2022.

Chris Claremont’s status as an iconic comic book writer began when he took over the direction of the X-Men’s stories in 1975, and that time period saw Claremont penning some of the biggest and most legendary X-Men stories of all time, such as “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and “Days of Future Past,” both of which have been made into movies in the X-Men franchise. Claremont, along with artist Jim Lee, was the creator of the Louisiana-born Gambit, who debuted in The Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 (1990) as a wise-cracking, thieving mutant with the power to create and manipulate kinetic energy, usually using a deck of cards to sharpen and focus his ability into powerful energy explosions.

Marvel’s announcement of the upcoming Claremont and Kotian series came with very little information, but it did include a gorgeous cover for Gambit #1 – drawn by Whilce Portacio – featuring who appears to be Gambit, also known as Remy LeBeau, and a young Storm of X-Men fame. In current Marvel continuity Ororo Munroe is not a child, but during Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s Uncanny X-Men #248 (1990) Storm was reverted back to the age of a child by the once-villain Nanny, and she ended up living on the streets of Cairo. It was in Cairo that Storm first met Gambit and the two teamed up as thieves, traveling around the American South stealing from bad folks. It stands to reason that this new Claremont series could be following Gambit and young Storm around in their early adventures, or seeing them somehow actually sent back in time!

There have been several attempts over the past two decades to publish popular Gambit-focused solo series, but all of them have been canceled soon after their debut, with no author seemingly getting the story of the New Orleans thief-turned-super hero right. As the creator of Gambit, it stands to reason that Claremont has a unique and meaningful connection and understanding of Remy, who he is and where he comes from, so there is hope in the comics community that this series is going to do what past Gambit series have not. Chris Claremont has not written a full series featuring the X-Men in some time, recently only appearing as the writer of one-offs or stories in anthologies, so the announcement today has given a lot of Claremont fans a cause for celebration!

Back in 2014, it was announced that Marvel was planning a Gambit movie as a spin-off of the X-Men franchise with Claremont writing the treatment for the film, but the movie never made it to production. It will be interesting to see if Claremont borrows ideas from that film, if he incorporates more modern Gambit experiences, or if this will truly be a deeper dive into a 1990s Claremont classic. Fans of Chris Claremont, Sid Kotian, Gambit, or the X-Men should rightfully be excited by this surprise announcement and should make sure to keep their eyes peeled for when Marvel reveals more details of Gambit #1 in 2022.
