10 Ghostbusters (2016) – 60
Despite being subject to an ugly online backlash that persisted for months, if not years, the remake of the beloved sci-fi comedy Ghostbusters was quite well-received by critics.
Hemsworth’s role in the movie demonstrated a clear shift in the actor’s overall image, which would come to be seen in his following superhero movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and showcased his capabilities in more improvisational and left-field comedy.
9 A Perfect Getaway – 63
Hemsworth has a relatively minor role in this interesting thriller but is still integral to its plot, which follows three couples vacationing in Hawaii who begin to suspect one another of being murderers.
The story revolves around the usual fun traditions of whodunnits and detective mysteries, particularly red herrings, making it hard to describe without giving too much away, so you’ll just have to find out who’s who for yourself.
8 Avengers: Age of Ultron – 66
The second Avengers movie is the lowest-rated of the bunch amongst both critics and fans but was nevertheless still a huge hit at the box office.
Avengers: Age of Ultron was mostly criticized for feeling like one of the MCU’s middlemen movies, that was really just a primer for more interesting sequels, and it did indeed leave the door open for the more successful Avengers sequels and Hemsworth’s most successful solo outing as the God of Thunder yet.
7 Avengers: Infinity War – 68
The third Avengers movie is, whilst rarely thought of as being equal or below Age of Ultron, still the next most likely to cause contention with some fans but was an even bigger hit at the box office and generally more well-received by critics.
Following on quite directly from the post-credits sequence in the previous Thor movie, Hemsworth once again stars as the God of Thunder and teams up for the first time on-screen with the similarly successful MCU superheroes the Guardians of the Galaxy.
6 The Avengers – 69
The original Avengers movie was a huge moment in Hemsworth’s career. Hemsworth had already appeared once before as the God of Thunder in his debut Thor movie but had gotten a frostier reception from critics and a number of fans.
The Avengers was, however, an undeniable home run in terms of audience satisfaction, box office haul, and critical approval. It also ensured that Hemsworth was recognized as an integral member of the MCU’s ensemble and not just a quirky side character, enabling even bigger successes down the road.
5 The Cabin in the Woods – 72
Before the world-conquering success of the first Avengers movie, Hemsworth had worked before with writer and director Joss Whedon on another more niche–but still very successful–project.
The Cabin in the Woods is a hugely funny horror-comedy movie, produced and co-written by Whedon, that takes aim at a number of horror subgenres and tropes with insightful satire and all-around creativity. Hemsworth plays into type as a lead jock hero but this is a movie where the rules are constantly flipped upside down.
4 Rush – 74
Now a bonafide leading man in a post-Avengers world, Hemsworth headed this thrilling sports drama with future MCU actor Daniel Brühl which depicted the rivalry between revered race car drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 1970s.
Directed by Ron Howard, the movie is an often emotional drama but showcased the director’s passion for true-to-life accuracy and detail, garnering praise from racing enthusiasts, movie critics, and even Lauda himself.
3 Thor: Ragnarok – 74
Though they have many fans and are not scathingly-reviewed, Hemsworth’s first two solo Thor movies are two of the lowest-rated MCU movies by critics but that all turned around with director Taiki Waititi’s third part.
Focussing much more intently on upbeat and irreverent humor, Thor: Ragnarok continued plot threads from the character’s arc but in a noticeably different style which resonated far better with critics and fans at the box office.
2 Avengers: Endgame – 78
The fourth Avengers movie brought the so-called ‘Infinity Saga’ to a close with a momentous box office cume and one of the highest critical ratings of the MCU overall.
Hemsworth moves the character further towards being a less-serious figure within the franchise and, unlike his other fellow original Avengers, gets another open ending in the MCU, with his fourth solo movie being announced not long after.
1 Star Trek – 82
Hemsworth only appears in the opening scene of director J.J. Abrams’ revamping of the Star Trek franchise but it’s possibly the most memorable scene of the movie.
Playing the father of legendary main character James Kirk, Hemsworth made a big impact in a short amount of time in the role and there have been rumblings of him making a return which unfortunately never materialized.
