Cobra Kai creator Jon Hurwitz says that various Karate Kid/Cobra Kai spinoff ideas are being discussed. Cobra Kai is the hit show that takes place 30 years after the events of 1984’s The Karate Kid, following the rivalry between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), two competing martial artists who reignite their childhood feud as adults. The show started on YouTube Red before being sold to Netflix, which dropped the season 3 earlier this year. Season 4 is expected to kick off sometime in December 2021, and Cobra Kai season 5 has already been greenlit.

Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg created Cobra Kai as a decades-later spinoff of The Karate Kid film, bringing back the original stars of the franchise to their iconic roles, this time as adults. In addition to the older stars joining the series, the creators brought in the next generation of karate students, including the offspring of the main leads, Daniel and Johnny. The show is one of the most-watched and most important on Netflix, and with more seasons in the works, the demand for more is certain to grow.

Jon Hurwitz took to Twitter for a brief Q&A today and answered some questions about the future of Cobra Kai, including the possibility of spinoff shows. The showrunner said that they are “batting around ideas for various Karate Kid/Cobra Kai spinoffs,” with some “further along than others.” Hurwitz didn’t want to spoil anything beyond that, but elaborated that there are “lots and lots of plans, both inside and outside of the Miyagiverse.” Check out his tweets below:

Season 4 of Cobra Kai will re-introduce fans to Terry Silver, as played by Thomas Ian Griffith, who first appeared in The Karate Kid: Part III. Silver was a bad influence on Daniel and even got him to join Cobra Kai for a time, before Daniel returned to his original sensei, Mr. Miyagi. After pulling characters from The Karate Kid: Part II for the third season, it’s certainly possible that the showrunners could move on to grabbing up talent such as Hilary Swank, from the fourth Karate Kid film, The Next Karate Kid.

With so many characters, both from The Karate Kid films and the Cobra Kai series, there are many options to continue the legacy of the franchise. The younger cast could easily be branched out, but there’s also the potential for a prequel series that covers Miyagi’s history or even a spinoff that covers the 30-year-gap of Daniel and Johnny’s lives. There are endless possibilities and surely Hurwitz and his crew are looking at all the best options available to tap into the allure of the show. With anticipation at an all-time high for season 4 of Cobra Kai, the appetite for more is sure to yield a great expansion to this franchise.
