Cobra Kai Daniel May Not Be The Only MiyagiDo Sensei

In Cobra Kai, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) bears the burden of keeping the legacy of Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita) alive, but there are others who could also be senseis of Miyagi-Do karate. Daniel-san became Miyagi’s pupil in 1984’s The Karate Kid and they remained best friends until the Okinawan’s death in 2011. But 10 years after LaRusso met Miyagi, his sensei took on a new student: Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank), who starred in The Next Karate Kid.

It’s possible that Daniel may have assumed that he was Mr. Miyagi’s only student; after all, Miyagi was living alone and working as a handyman when they met and, although Miyagi was secretly a karate master, he had no interest in training anyone in his family’s ancestral martial arts. Miyagi even originally intended to only specifically train Daniel so he could make a respectable showing at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament so he could earn the respect of the Cobra Kai, who were bullying and ganging up on LaRusso. After Miyagi and Daniel-san’s friendship blossomed, they continued training together. In turn, Miyagi became less solitary and by the time he traveled to Boston to accept a Presidential honor for his World War II service in 1994, Miyagi was quite willing to take responsibility for Julie Pierce. Julie turned out to be the granddaughter (and student) of Miyagi’s Army buddy, Lt. Jack Pierce, who was also the first person he trained in Miyagi-Do karate and, in turn, taught Julie.

By the end of Cobra Kai season 2, Daniel was at a crossroads as his dream of resurrecting the Miyagi-Do dojo and honor Mr. Miyagi by training a new generation went up in flames. LaRusso’s decades-old rivalry with Cobra Kai’s Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) spread to their respective students. The kids’ own animosity towards each other erupted into an all-out brawl at West Valley High, which centered on Daniel’s daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) and her own arch-enemy, Tory Nichols (Peyton List). By the time the melee was over, Johnny’s top pupil, Miguel Diaz (Xolo Mariduena), Daniel’s own wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) demanded that he shut down his dojo. But whatever Daniel does next, it’s not clear if he realizes that he doesn’t have to go it alone and he isn’t the sole inheritor of Mr. Miyagi’s teachings and legacy. To quote another beloved teacher from a movie in the 1980s, Yoda, “There is another.”

Cobra Kai has not established whether Daniel ever met Julie but she is canonically part of the franchise since Cobra Kai’s producers consider every movie Mr. Miyagi appeared in to be part of the overall “Miyagi-Verse”. Julie only made her lone appearance over 25 years ago so it’s unknown whether she continued her Miyagi-Do training as an adult. However, Miyagi trained Julie-san differently than he did Daniel-san in The Next Karate Kid; Pierce brought prior Miyagi-Do knowledge and her own distinct, athletic skill-set to the table. Mr. Miyagi even introduced her to his Buddhist monk friends, whom she befriended. It’s quite possible that Julie knows Miyagi-Do secrets that Daniel may not. And, if she kept up her training, Julie may even be a better practitioner of Miyagi-D0 than LaRusso – and a potential sensei herself.

Canonically, there is also one more known living Miyagi-Do martial artist: Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okomoto). Chozen was the nephew and best student of Sato Toguchi (Danny Kamekona), who was Miyagi’s childhood best friend and trained alongside him by Miyagi’s father. As such, Chozen’s karate is fundamentally Miyagi-Do, although it had been altered to be more aggressive by Sato. Chozen hated Daniel when they met in The Karate Kid Part II and he openly tried to kill LaRusso.

However, rumors persist that Chozen will return in Cobra Kai season 3, possibly to reveal heretofore unknown secrets about Mr. Miyagi to Daniel when LaRusso returns to Okinawa for the first time since the summer of 1985. Chozen is another bastion of Miyagi-Do knowledge and one more possible sensei. Whether the older Chozen befriends LaRusso or remains his foe in Cobra Kai season 3, Daniel isn’t as alone as he may think, and Mr. Miyagi’s karate knowledge lives on in others who could also be senseis.
