Connor Roy Will Play Dirty & Stand Up For Himself In Succession Season 3

Succession star Alan Ruck predicts that Connor Roy will start standing up for himself in season 3. Ruck features as the eldest of the Roy clan, joined by his on-screen siblings Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Jeremy Strong. Currently premiering its third season, the hit HBO show continues from the fallout of the season 2 press conference, as Kendall once again tries to outmaneuver his father (Brian Cox) and assume control of Waystar RoyCo.

Delays caused by the COVID pandemic meant that anticipation for Succession season 3 was high upon its debut in October, generating an impressive 1.4 million viewers. Amidst the corporate chaos and familial backstabbing, the latest series sees Connor Roy press ahead with his dream of becoming the next President of the United States, despite the blatant disregard of his family. Though the eldest child, Connor is widely viewed as the lesser of the four Roy children. His lack of direction and perceived absence of ambition means that he is constantly overlooked by his hyper-competitive siblings and belittled for his sometimes fanciful ideas.

Addressing the character’s direction in season 3, Ruck told Collider that fans could expect Connor to start standing up for himself in season 3. Though he admits that he was once concerned Connor could become the family “punching bag,” Ruck assures that things are starting to change. He adds that Connor is “begrudgingly” realizing he needs to play dirty to be taken seriously. Check out his full comments below:

“I was worried for a while that he was just gonna be the family punching bag. He’s starting to stand up for himself a bit more and you can expect more of that, as time goes on. That was a concern of mine for a while, but then they started to address that, which I think was their plan all along. They just needed me to be patient, which I am no good at.”

“I think it’s become clear in this family that the only way you get people to pay attention to you is if you have something that’s financially valuable, or you have something that’s damaging and they don’t want anybody to know. You have to play dirty and you have to play for keeps. Connor is finally begrudgingly taking that to heart and he’s started to play ball on the family’s terms.”

Succession season 3 continues the battle for supremacy among the Roy siblings. With Siobhan attempting to assert herself as her father’s natural heir, Roman allying with current Waystar CEO Gerri, and Kendall heralding in a substantial legal storm, it’s easy for Connor to fall by the wayside. The least combative of the Roy offspring, with no apparent interest in his father’s corporate empire, Connor’s desires have been left somewhat ambiguous, save for his declared intention to become President. Typically avoiding conflict with his siblings and seeking only to please his father, it will be interesting to see what circumstances will cause Connor to adopt his family’s dirtier tactics.

With the fourth season of Succession already confirmed by HBO, Ruck’s character could yet enjoy a great deal of progression, mainly if he sticks to his guns and pushes ahead with his political plans. With season 3 not even halfway through, Connor’s evolution into a more assertive member of the Roy family could even (inadvertently) place him in the running as his father’s successor. As the eldest and arguably ‘cleanest’ child of Logan Roy, he has the potential to be the best fit for the company leadership while it is scrutinized by the FBI. With five episodes and at least another season of Succession to go, there’s just no predicting where the Roy family’s infighting will lead to next.
