Due to his duality, Adam Sandler is both a cherished and reviled figure in Hollywood. The man can put out the worst kind of immature comedy, then follow it up with an Oscar-worthy dramatic performance. Look no further than his turns in Punch Drunk Love or Uncut Gems to discern his talents as an actor.

He tends to cling to a close-knit group of performers to tag along with in his every cinematic endeavor, including that of the Grown Ups film. The premise is made for the group of comedians that includes Kevin James, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider, among others. It sees childhood friends reunite for no other reason than to reminisce. However, the film does offer a few lighthearted moments and calls to mind other, perhaps better movies that ring the same bell.

10 Grown Ups 2 Is The Obvious Follow-Up

The natural inclination after viewing Grown Ups is to move on to the sequel, Grown Ups 2. This film has more of the same gags, but they’re even more loosely tied together by events resembling a plot. Lenny Feder and his family have moved back to his hometown of Stanton where his buddies live. Ridiculous antics ensue, including surprising cameos from wrestler, Stone Cold Steve Austin and basketball legend, Shaquille O’Neal. Fans of the first installment should find more of what they want here.

9 Here Comes The Boom Strikes The Same Chords

A boxing comedy starring Kevin James, Here Comes The Boom is surprisingly entertaining given its lower-tier cast. James is an endearing presence as a biology teacher, Scott Voss, who decides to take up MMA to pay for his school’s music program.

Highlighting the conditions that teachers all over the country face in regards to budgetary limitations, this film is a worthwhile investment. The film relies on physical gags, a staple of James, and executes them well. It’s a pleasant, diverting comedy.

8 It Chapters 1 & 2 Also Stars A Group Of Kids Growing Up

On the opposite end of the spectrum from comedy lies horror. Should viewers want something similar but admittedly different, the two-parter It: Chapters 1 & 2 is a drama following a group of friends as they return to their hometown to face the evil residing there. The film is not without its lighter moments, but all in all, it’s an intense ride. Bill Skarsgard’s career-defining turn as Pennywise has even drawn comparisons to Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight.

7 Ant-Man And The Wasp Is An Irreverant Superhero Comedy

The superhero genre has expanded to include a myriad of different genres, with the most pertinent being comedy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is renowned for its liberal use of quips and one-liners.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is the epitome of earnest humor with a hilarious performance from Paul Rudd and an empathetic turn from Evangeline Lilly. The film’s stakes are low compared to the often world-altering consequences of the superhero genre and serve as a light adventure with a somewhat-functioning partnership.

6 I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry Is Dated But Has An Alright Message

The film was released 14 years ago, but I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is still worth a revisit – if only to understand the attitude towards the LGBTQIA+ community at the time. It does recall several offensive stereotypes, but largely preaches that acceptance of people, whether perceived as different or strange, is the correct way to live. A memorable scene depicts Sandler’s character, Chuck, standing up to a homophobic religious leader about his use of a slur. This was a progressive film for its time and should be viewed within that context.

5 Benchwarmers Is A Sports Comedy About Washed Up Baseball Fans

Benchwarmers star the usual gamut of Sandler-adjacent faces (David Spade and Rob Schneider), plus Napoleon Dynamite star, Jon Heder. It revolves around baseball and the protagonist, Schneider’s Gus Matthews, as he attempts to win a baseball tournament alongside his buddies, played by Heder and Spade.

It’s not too deep. However, it is a pleasant escape, especially if the viewer is a fan of baseball. It retains the same basic tone as Sandler’s previous productions and should certainly satisfy fans of Grown-Ups.

4 Happy Gilmore Is Full Of Physical Gags

Adam Sandler made it during the early to mid-nineties with Happy Gilmore cementing his position as the new comedic force in Hollywood. A classic in Sandler fandoms, the movie follows Sandler’s titular Gilmore as he attempts to win his grandmother’s house back with cash from a golf tournament. Fans of GU cannot go wrong with giving this movie a shot: it contains the DNA that would eventually result in the ensemble film. This comedy, along with another Sandler-led movie, propelled the actor to the success that he’d eventually experience.

3 Billy Madison Is A Legendary Cheeky Comedy

Alongside Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison is the other holy duology of early Adam Sandler fare. The premise is absolutely absurd: the titular character returns to school, repeating every grade, in order to graduate and inherit his father’s company. It takes full advantage of the actor’s immature perspective in regards to humor and is instantly quotable. For those who grew up in the 90s, Billy Madison is required viewing to understand the zeitgeist at the time.

2 Tropic Thunder Stars Past-Their-Prime Actors Stuck In A Hostile Country

Like I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Tropic Thunder is a film best viewed in its context. Even in its time, the film ruffled feathers with the portrayal of the lengths actors are willing to go for their craft.

Robert Downey, Jr. shines in his role as Kirk Lazarus – an Australian thespian who “transforms” himself into an African-American for the movie he’s making. It’s a provocative film, although it includes gags in the same vein as GU. Viewed within its proper context, the film is a masterful satire of the conceit of artists.

1 Hotel Transylvania Involves Most Of The Same Cast

For younger viewers, Sandler recruited his usual gang of pals to voice the persistent Hotel Transylvania series. Viewers can expect much of the same type of humor and perspective here, albeit filtered through the lens of family-friendly animation. Given the franchise currently has three features under its belt, fans of GU have plenty of content to enjoy. Given Sandler’s tendency to keep his friends employed, viewers may find hope in waiting for a potential Grown Ups 3.
