Dawson’s Creek Joeys 5 Best & 5 Worst Traits

Most teen shows have a studious character who follows rules and doesn’t rebel as much as the other characters. On Dawson’s Creek, that person is girl next door Joey Potter. Played by Katie Holmes, this famous teen character is best friends with Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek) and has to adjust as their friendship starts to shift and evolve.

Of all the teens living in Capeside, it’s fair to say that Joey has the brightest and most compelling future ahead of her as it’s clear that she’s going to do super well in college and beyond. Joey is a well-drawn character who has a lot of things to be proud of, along with some negative traits that aren’t so attractive.

10 Best: Ambitious

Besides Dawson and his dreams to become a well-respected filmmaker, Joey is the most ambitious character on Dawson’s Creek. She wants to go to a really great school and make something of herself, and viewers of the show can tell that she’s definitely going to do it.

Joey is one of the best students at Capeside High, and she always takes her homework more seriously than the other characters.

9 Worst: Petty

Sure, she’s still young, but Joey can be a petty person, and this is one of the worst traits that she exhibits on the popular show.

One example is when Dawson’s mom Gail (Mary-Margaret Humes) is having an affair, and instead of respecting that it’s a family matter and realizing that Gail is suffering, Joey makes mean comments and gives her some pretty pointed stares. Joey can sometimes let her feelings get in the way of understanding the nuance of a situation.

8 Best: Level-Headed

Joey is level-headed and calm. She often tries to talk Dawson out of spiraling, especially when he freaks out about his relationship with Jen in the first season.

While she’s got emotions like everyone else and can be dramatic, she can hide her true feelings, at least for a little while. Joey is the kind of person who is good in a crisis.

7 Worst: Self-Pitying

Joey spends a good portion of the show feeling sorry for herself. This is particularly obvious when she has a crush on Dawson at the beginning of the show and Abby Morgan (Monica Keegan) lets everyone know during Saturday detention.

Self-pity isn’t a great look for Joey. While of course she’s had a hard and heartbreaking life so far, she should appreciate what she does have and try to be a bit more positive.

6 Best: Supportive

Joey is always a supportive friend and girlfriend, which is why it’s so frustrating when her romance with Pacey doesn’t work out at the end of season four. She’s there for Dawson and the rest of the gang, and she can be counted on.

Sure, sometimes Joey has to ignore her own feelings in order to be a good friend, like when she accompanies Dawson and Jen (Michelle Williams) to the movies in season one and feels like a third wheel. But she’s always a caring figure in everyone’s lives.

5 Worst: Pessimistic

If Joey wasn’t pessimistic, she wouldn’t be Joey and the series would look very different, but that doesn’t mean that this is a good thing. Joey may not come right out and tell people that their dreams won’t come true, but she might as well because it’s clear that she feels that way.

As Joey starts growing up and experiences college life, she starts acting a bit happier, but her tendency to look on the dark side is still there.

4 Best: Romantic

Although she might not seem like it at first, Joey is pretty romantic, particularly with Pacey. She loves sailing with him for an entire summer and the two spend a lot of time cuddling and sharing their feelings with each other.

Joey also shares a romantic kiss with Dawson in the season one finale, which is definitely one of the biggest moments on the show. While some other characters are nervous and insecure about finding love, Joey has no problem jumping right in.

3 Worst: Dishonesty

Joey isn’t a compulsive liar, but she does have quite a few instances of pretending to be someone else or trying to spare someone’s feelings. At the beginning of the series, she tells a cute stranger that her name is Debra and she’s a rich girl from New York, and when Dawson acts if she’s slept with Pacey, she lies.

Joey has a tendency to hold the truth, and that’s not a positive trait. She really should just be honest.

2 Best: Witty

While there are many snarky and hilarious teen characters, Joey really takes the cake when it comes to a witty high schooler. She can spar with someone like no other and she’s always ready for a clever conversation.

Since Joey reads so much and is so studious, she knows a lot about various topics, and even if she’s in the wrong, she still has something clever to say.

1 Worst: Antisocial

While Joey was always excited to go away to college, she never really thought about the social aspect of it, which is why it’s hard for her to bond with her roommate Audrey (Busy Phillipps) at first.

Joey is fairly antisocial, which is a personality trait that doesn’t do her any favors. Whenever she’s dealing with a supporting character like Charlie (Chad Micheal Murray) or Drue (Mark Matkevich), she’s not going to be very nice to them at first. It’s rare that she wants to go out and have fun.
