Christopher Chance, star of DC Black Label’s The Human Target, will get his own one-shot detailing his life prior to the events of the current series.

DC announced Tales of the Human Target from writer Tom King and artists Mikel Janín, Rafael Albuquerque, Kevin Maguire and Greg Smallwood. The new one-shot is set before Chance sets out on a mission to find his killer after he drinks poison intended for notorious DC villain Lex Luthor. “In this one-shot anthology, Christopher Chance ‘teams up’ with members of the Justice League International – some of whom already are prominently involved in this story – in four connecting mysteries, and one of them may be responsible for the poison that has The Human Target living on borrowed time,” DC said of Tales of the Human Target.

According to King’s post on Everlasting Productions’ Substack, the one-shot comes with three different stories. The first is a Human Target/Booster Gold story drawn by Maguire, followed by a Human Target/Fire tale drawn by Janín and concluded with a Human Target/Guy Gardner entry drawn by Albuquerque.

The Human Target #1 launched in Nov. 2021 from DC Black Label. The series follows Chance as he disguises himself as high-risk clients in order to weed out any would-be assassins. Chance accepts a case protecting Luthor when he inadvertently becomes poisoned. With only 12 days to live, Chance then launches an investigation to determine who his killer is.

After striking up a romantic relationship with Justice League International’s Tora Olafsdotter/Ice, Chance frequently crosses paths with Guy Gardner, Olafsdotter’s jealous ex-boyfriend, throughout the series. The Human Target #6 brings the conflict to an explosive and brutal end when Olafsdotter and Chance murder Gardner after he unexpectedly shows up at their house one day. The startling moment leaves the two characters unsure as to what their next move should be; however, Chance says he’s relatively sure that nobody is going to come looking for the two of them following the murder.

Currently on a break, The Human Target, a 12-issue series, will resume in the coming months with The Human Target #7. DC also announced that fans who have missed individual issues of the series can catch up with The Human Target Book One, which collects the first six issues of the series from King and Smallwood. The book goes on sale Sept. 13, followed by The Human Target #7 on Sept. 23.

Tales of the Human Target features cover art by Smallwood and variant covers by David Marquez and Jorge Jiménez. The one-shot releases on Aug. 23 from DC.
