D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Although high fantasy stories and worlds can become anything that a creator can dream up, it seems like many of the most popular fantasies in modern fiction always bear some kind of striking resemblance to the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Shadow & Bone, Netflix’s latest epic fantasy offering, is no different. It’s not hard to notice the similarities between the D&D world and the Grishaverse, but, if the characters from Leigh Bardugo’s world actually found themselves in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, what would their character classes be?

10 Baghra – Wizard

Within the D&D framework, there are very many options for magical character classes. But the character class that is focused mostly on the study of magic is the Wizard class, and thus it seems like the ideal class for a character like Baghra.

She is obviously an enormously talented Grisha, but her real power and abilities lie in her vast knowledge of magic, a knowledge that she tries to impart on the Grisha that she trains.

9 Matthias Helvar – Monk

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Monks are a character class that is most notable for their exceptional skills as warriors, as well as their intense devotion to whatever cause it is that they choose to fight for.

And while his relationship with Nina ultimately seems to have led Matthias away from the anti-Grisha brigade, clearly he was willing to risk his life fighting against what he believed to be evil. While Monks aren’t the most powerful class, they may be one of the most passionate and dedicated.

8 Nina Zenik – Druid

Obviously all of the Grisha naturally fall into some magical character class in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, and it seems like Nina would be best suited to the Druid class.

This is a magical class that is rooted in nature, and while Nina seems to be both a strong and well-educated Grisha (if General Kirigan’s concern about her is any indication, anyway), her Heartrending abilities are about as connected to nature and life as possible.

7 Genya Safin – Artificer

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Artificers are a unique character class in the Dungeons & Dragons world in the sense that they can draw great power from magic derived from the more mundane world around them.

Artificers are masters at taking the ordinary and making it into the extraordinary, which seems to sum up Genya’s character and abilities quite perfectly. Although her talents as a tailor are seemingly put to frivolous use, her ability to tweak and master the most average of things is impressive.

6 Jesper Fahey – Bard

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Clearly Jesper Fahey is one of the most talented gunmen in the world of Shadow & Bone, but what really makes him stick out from the crowd is his natural charisma and charm, which makes him seem like a good fit for a Bard.

Bards are typically very versatile fighters who really excel when they’re put under pressure, and they’re masters at coming up with plans on the fly that miraculously seem to work.

5 Inej Ghafa – Cleric

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Clerics are a character class that is extraordinarily capable in combat, but what is closest to their hearts isn’t their abilities, but their own beliefs. Clerics are unique in that they’re both warriors and healers, and their power comes from the gods themselves and they are only tools of those gods.

While Inej doesn’t have a literal relationship with any god, it’s obvious that her faith in things is what drives her more than anything else, making her a great Cleric.

4 Kaz Brekker – Rogue

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

Rogues are a fantastic and fun character class for any D&D player, and the fact that Kaz is such a perfect Rogue should demonstrate why exactly this class is so thrilling.

Rogues are ruthless scoundrels who will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, and if they can be sneaky and tricky then it’s even better. The Rogue philosophy is essentially why fight fair when you can rig the game in your favor, and that is a perfectly Kaz philosophy as well.

3 Mal Oretsev – Ranger

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

The Ranger character class is a classic fantasy archetype that Mal seems to be very well-suited to by his nature. Although he does have a close relationship with Alina, like most Rangers, he’s not particularly socially inclined.

Rangers are experts at working on their own and they are prone to going off on long solo journeys, which again seems to mirror Mal’s experience over the course of the first season of Shadow & Bone.

2 General Kirigan – Warlock

D&D Classes Of The Shadow & Bone Characters

While there are many character classes in Dungeons & Dragons that are wielders of magic, arguably the magical class that leans most towards the dark arts is the Warlock class.

Typically Warlocks have gained their power through some sort of devil’s bargain, but in the case of the Darkling, it seems like his dark bargain was with himself. Warlocks are also some of the most destructive characters, which suits General Kirigan just fine.

1 Alina Starkov – Sorcerer

Sorcerers are yet another incredibly powerful magical character class, but what separates them from the Wizards, Warlocks, or Druids of the world is that their magical power is derived almost entirely from themselves.

It’s an instinctive magic rather than a trained one, and so Alina Starkov seems to be best matched with the Sorcerer character class. She might not have the skills or education of someone like the Darkling, but she’s a threat to him because she intuitively understands her power.
