Dead Silence 2 The Return Of Mary Shaw Updates Why It Didnt Happen

Why did Dead Silence 2: The Return Of Mary Shaw never happen? James Wan and Leigh Whannell made their names with the original Saw, which the former directed while the latter wrote and starred. The movie was intended as a straight to video release, but after receiving strong buzz at festivals, it received a theatrical push and became a surprise smash. This led to yearly sequels, though Wan declined to return while Whannell wrote parts two and three. The series is still going to this day, with the upcoming ninth movie starring and written by Chris Rock arriving in 2020.

Naturally, the success of Saw led James Wan and Leigh Whannell to quickly reteam for another horror movie, which became 2007’s Dead Silence. The movie stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) as Jamie, who investigates the murder of his wife after receiving a creepy dummy as a gift. Dead Silence features some seriously eerie sequences and feels like Wan’s attempt at an old-fashioned gothic horror movie. That said, the film itself is quite flawed, and Whannell would later recount the “hellish” experience of making the movie and has dubbed it “Dud Silence.”

While easily being the weakest of the Wan/Whannell collaborations to date the movie still has a cult following, so why didn’t Dead Silence 2: The Return Of Mary Shaw happen?

Dead Silence Ends With Mary Shaw Winning

Dead Silence reveals the main villain Mary Shaw (Judith Roberts, Orange Is The New Black) returned from the grave to seek revenge on Jamie’s family. A twist ending reveals she killed his father Edward and turned his body into an elaborate puppet and Edward’s “wife” Ella is really Mary Shaw in the form of a very lifelike puppet. She then kills Jamie, gaining her revenge.

Dead Silence Underperformed

While a potential Dead Silence 2 was once on the cards, the underperformance of the original nixed those plans. The movie barely recouped its production budget and while it performed well on DVD, this wasn’t enough to earn it a follow-up. It also received mostly weak reviews from critics.

Dead Silence 2 Is Possible (But Unlikely)

While Dead Silence 2 remains a possibility, it probably won’t happen. The original has earned enough of a following in the years since that an STV sequel continuing the tongue ripping adventures of Mary Shaw and her puppet children is financially viable; doubly so if the cover is adorned with “From The Creators Of Saw and Insidious!”

That’s been no mention of such a project, however, and given their experiences making Dead Silence, James Wan and Leigh Whannell would almost certainly have no creative involvement. Wan has since directed Aquaman while Whannell helmed the upcoming The Invisible Man, so even if they were interested in revisiting old concepts, Dead Silence 2: The Return Of Mary Shaw wouldn’t be one of them.
