Deadpool 3 In Development At Marvel Studios Confirms Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds confirms Deadpool 3 is currently in development at Marvel Studios. As Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox became official earlier this year, it was said the Merc With a Mouth would be the only X-Men character who wouldn’t be rebooted at the Mouse House. That train of thought made a great deal of sense, considering how successful the first two Deadpool films were. Despite their R-rating, they’re the highest-grossing X-Men films of all-time, collectively earning approximately $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Audiences have clearly responded to the series, so Disney’s going to keep things as is.

While that’s all fine and good, the question of exactly when moviegoers would see more of Deadpool remained. During San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios unveiled their Phase 4 slate and confirmed other films starring the Fantastic Four and the X-Men were in the works. But all’s been relatively quiet on the Deadpool front – save for the news that planned spinoff X-Force was being shelved. Back in October, Reynolds teased a meeting he had with Marvel Studios, and now it looks like things are in motion to put another Deadpool movie together.

During his appearance on Live With Ryan and Kelly on Christmas Eve (hat tip Gujju Bindass), Reynolds was asked about the future of the Deadpool franchise. According to the actor, he’s currently working with Marvel to develop a new project:

“Yeah we’re working on it right now with the whole team. We’re over at Marvel now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it.”

Reynolds obviously couldn’t delve too far into specifics, but this is encouraging to hear. Even if Deadpool 3 is in the earliest stages right now, it shows Disney actually is willing to continue the hit series. What’ll be interesting to see is if the Deadpool franchise is integrated into the larger MCU or if it operates as a separate entity. Over the summer, reports stated Disney was debating the possibility of having Deadpool alternate between R-rated solo films and PG-13 MCU team-ups. One of the benefits of Deadpool being under the same umbrella as the Avengers is the opportunity for fun character interactions that fans would love to see onscreen. Unfortunately, viewers will never see Wade Wilson trade barbs with Tony Stark, but it would still be entertaining to see Deadpool cross paths with someone like Spider-Man, as they did in the comics.

There’s still no word on when Deadpool 3 may see the light of day, but in all likelihood that film is still a few years away. Marvel’s Phase 4 (which also includes a full slate of Disney+ TV shows) is plotted out through 2021. Marvel does have multiple release dates claimed for mystery films in 2022 and 2023, so perhaps that’s when Wade Wilson will return to the big screen. By that point, Marvel will probably have a greater idea what they’re going to do with their newly inherited Fox properties and have a plan in place for Deadpool, the X-Men, and more.
