Thanks to a new update, players in Death Stranding can now turn off the extended BT warning in the game’s menu settings. Named the best game of 2019 by numerous publications, Death Stranding was Hideo Kojima’s first project in which he had entire directorial and creative control after leaving the company umbrella of Konami, and his vision was reflected in almost every aspect of the game’s mechanics.

While long-time Metal Gear Solid fans and newcomers alike were often confused by some of the choices Kojima made when developing and marketing Death Stranding, those players who made it to the end of the game often found it to be a complete and fulfilling experience. Many players, however, likely never made it that far, having given up at some point when faced with another arduous and seemingly insurmountable trek through a desolate landscape which looks and feels quite similar to all the other previous treks through equally desolate surroundings. For all its cinematic grandeur and lavish physics, there are many points where Death Stranding just feels unendingly slow.

It’s a good thing, then, that Kojima Productions has been working on ways to make parts of Death Stranding feel less tedious, and according to a Twitter message from the developers they have found an easy way to shave off some extra time. Previously, whenever the player entered an area containing “Beached Things” a small animation would play out which alerted the player to the fact they were about to have to avoid or kill the BTs in an encounter. While necessary and intense the first time it’s shown, the same scene repeats every single time a player enters an area containing BTs throughout the length of the game, and these constant moments of delay add up over time.

【News】There is an update for #DeathStranding launched today! The update now enables you to change the settings to not have the effect when you encounter the BTs every time. Make sure to change your settings from the title screen to do so. #TomorrowIsInYourHands pic.twitter.com/9J4k2hc0Cs

According to the instructions above, all players need to do to change their BT encounter warning is go to the settings screen from the main menu and then adjust the specific setting to indicate “First Time Only” and confirm the change. Now, instead of having to sit through the same animation over and over, the video will only play the first time players encounter the Beached Things, and not after, something which will hopefully make backtracking through dangerous areas far less tedious.

Death Stranding is a game of extremes, from long, winding paths across open countryside where one wrong step can send a player’s entire cargo tumbling to the ground to intense stealth and shooting sections which almost feel out of place by comparison. While clearly not a title for everyone and filled with hundreds of Hideo Kojima’s weird ideas, players who already love Death Stranding will likely be happy about this new update, and perhaps with a few more quality of life improvements in the same vein Kojima Productions can convince others to give it another chance.
