Devil May Cry 5 How Vergil Will Play

Capcom’s latest title in the Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry 5, is getting an extensive set of upgrades for the next-generation of gaming. Confirmed as a launch title for both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition will be bringing new modes of play and graphical updates. Chief among the changes, however, is the return of Vergil as a playable character once again.

Vergil’s history in Devil May Cry stretches back as far as the first game of the series, but he would make his first fully playable appearance in the special edition of Devil May Cry 3, bringing with him his Yamato and a unique playstyle built around his weapon. Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition would see Vergil’s second appearance, with a whole system called “Concentration” constructed to play off of his precise combat style and rewarding players for careful combat. With his return in DMC5, Vergil’s got some old and new tricks up his sleeve.

In a hands-on preview published by IGN, Vergil’s general style of gameplay was shown in a more in-depth fashion for players to see what tools he brings to the table. As expected, Vergil’s primary weapon returns, bringing along with it the “Concentration” gauge that defined his playstyle in his last playable appearance. Along with his trademark Yamato, Devil May Cry 5’s Vergil has brought with him a few other weapons that fans will be familiar with.

What Vergil’s Playstyle Brings to DMC5

Devil May Cry 5 How Vergil Will Play

As shown in the gameplay footage that was released, Devil May Cry 5’s Vergil is shown to be wielding his old arsenal in its entirety, including Beowulf and the Force Edge. Beowulf allows Vergil to use a more “martial arts,” hand-to-hand based styles in his combat, while the Force Edge effectively lets Vergil mix some of Dante’s moveset with his own through a combination of both swords. However, as the Force Edge (in its awakened “Sparda” form) is in Dante’s possession now, Devil May Cry 5’s Vergil makes due with a replica reminiscent of his Summoned Swords known as the Miracle Edge.

Vergil can also spend his Concentration meter in one fell swoop, piercing himself with the Yamato to summon V, his human half, to the field along with all three of V’s traditional summons from the original title. This technique decimates the field all around him before he drops to the floor and reforms as Devil May Cry 5’s Vergil once again. In a noted departure from his previous playstyle, Vergil’s Devil Trigger usage sees a fusion of Nero’s from Devil May Cry 4 with Dante’s in Devil May Cry 5.

Devil May Cry 5: How Vergil’s Devil Triggers Work

With the normal use of the Devil Trigger, DMC5’s Vergil will summon a doppelganger in its Devil Triggered state, similar to Nero’s usage of the Yamato in DMC4, and the doppelganger follows through with Vergil’s techniques in a stylish, flourishing display. Vergil can also activate a Sin Devil Trigger ala Dante to transform himself and gain a whole new arsenal of attacks, such as the screen-filling Judgement Cut End, which results in the transformed devil flying through the screen and slicing through everything with his blade in a visual treat. Devil May Cry 5’s Vergil can also punch the ground, causing a powerful eruption similar to Beowulf’s Volcano technique on a grander scale.

Vergil’s return to DMC5 as a playable character has been one of the most sought-after features from fans. With the game already hailed as one of the greatest in the action genre, DMC5 Special Edition looks to give players more reasons to revisit the landmark title with a new difficulty setting, an additional Turbo Mode, and Vergil’s return as a playable character. Fans of the franchise on current-generation platforms, thankfully, will not be locked out of Vergil, as Devil May Cry 5 will receive a DLC upgrade that grants regular edition players the chance to make the devils cry with a motivated Son of Sparda.
