Dexter New Blood Episode 1 Ending Twist & Blood Stains Explained

Dexter: New Blood episode 1, “Cold Snap,” features an exciting twist ending with a returning character, mysterious bloodstains, and a thrilling set-up for Dexter’s return to killing in the new season. “Cold Snap” marks the first return to the screen for serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) since the original series’ divisive season 8 finale in 2013. The last time Dexter was seen, he had faked his death in Miami, abandoned his son Harrison, and changed his identity to become a lumberjack in Oregon.

With New Blood being set 10 years after Dexter’s original finale, the series has plenty to answer for what happened to America’s favorite serial killer during this time. Dexter season 9, episode 1, “Cold Snap,” follows the daily minutiae of Dexter Morgan living in the small town of Iron Lake, New York under the alias Jim Lindsay. Working as a clerk at Fred’s Fish and Game and dating the police chief, Dexter is keeping his old covers close at hand, even though he hasn’t killed in nearly 10 years. With his deceased sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) serving as his dark passenger instead of Harry, New Blood is taking Dexter on a different path as he reckons with his past, falls back into old habits, and attempts to live a “normal” life where he can’t hurt those he loves.

After documenting Dexter’s monotonous life in New Blood where he keeps a routine to stray from killing, Iron Lake’s new arrivals and old ghosts start to bring out his dark passenger. Episode 1 shows Dexter being watched by a mysterious figure who has arrived in town, all the while Iron Lake’s wealthy, irresponsible resident Matt Caldwell tempts his dark passenger. With a new serial killer also on the loose in Dexter’s adopted home, the episode 1 ending sets up an exciting season for New Blood’s cast and characters.

What Happened At The Ending of Dexter: New Blood Episode 1

The premiere episode of Dexter season 9 ends with an exciting character twist as well as Dexter falling back into his murderous habits from the original series. After being stalked by an unknown hooded figure throughout New Blood’s episode, Dexter arrives home to find a teenager who has broken into his cabin. Alarming the serial killer, the teenager asks him if his name is Dexter Morgan, revealing himself to be his estranged son Harrison. After Deb reminds him the reason why Dexter left and how everyone he loves dies (including her), Dexter tells Harrison he doesn’t know who he is and he’s not the guy the teen is searching for. A disappointed Harrison leaves, with Dexter feeling immense regret.

The next morning, New Blood shows Dexter hiking in the woods to find the white deer he had been following, only for Matt Caldwell – who Dexter earlier found out killed multiple people without repercussions – to shoot it. In an act of rage after being reminded of who he really is from seeing Harrison, Dexter sets up a kill room in his shed – white tarp, saran wrap, and all. After killing Matt and disposing of his body, New Blood episode 1 ends with Dexter going to the bus station, telling Harrison he lied, and bringing his son back home with him.

Why Dexter Went Back For Harrison (After Killing Matt)

Considering Deb – as his inner conscious – did a fine job convincing him of the dangers of bringing Harrison back into his life, it may have been against Dexter’s better judgment to go back for his son. Dexter originally left Harrison in season 8 because he worried about the damage he would do to him, whether it be that his demons would make him a poor parent or his lifestyle would lead to Harrison joining the list of his deceased loved ones. Seeing Harrison again was the first real reminder in a decade of who Dexter truly is, which includes being a father. After only one slip-up in 10 years, Dexter likely feels that he is in a place where he can raise Harrison as a real family, or at least give Harrison the answers he deserves. New Blood’s episode ends with Dexter saying his father Harry taught and protected him growing up, and he wants to do the same for Harrison. Harry was the only person in the world who truly understood Dexter when he was younger, so Dexter wants to be that for Harrison in season 9, whether he has the same dark passenger inside of him or not. Dexter needed a teacher and protector, and Harrison deserves the same from his father.

What Were The Blood Stains In The Snow

After Dexter Morgan has brought Harrison back home, New Blood finishes with the camera panning to several mysterious bloodstains in the snow. Dexter hasn’t killed for 10 years, so as he himself admits, he’s fairly rusty. New Blood doesn’t reveal exactly where Dexter buried Matt’s body, so it’s likely the blood dripped from the bags when Dexter was moving Matt’s remains. There were quite a few bloodstains, so this was a huge mistake made by Dexter’s experienced killer if true, one that could easily get him caught in subsequent episodes, or at least raise questions. Since there appears to be another killer on the loose in Iron Lake, it could also have something to do with the other murderer enacting his terror on Dexter’s own land. At the same time, Dexter’s promo showed what seems to be the main character shoveling up the same blood in the snow. The most likely scenario is that Dexter slipped up, clearly not paying attention to the first rule on the Code of Harry: Don’t get caught.

How Cold Snap’s Ending Sets Up New Blood Season 1

The ending of Cold Snap sets up intriguing storylines for the Morgans in New Blood’s season. For starters, Harrison returning means someone else knows Dexter Morgan’s true identity, even if he doesn’t know he’s a serial killer. While also hiding his murders from Harrison, Dexter will have to become a father again, also answering the hard questions of why he left his son in the first place. “Cold Snap” also brings back Dexter as an active serial killer, with the ending implying that Matt won’t be his only kill of the season. Dexter: New Blood was promoted with another hunter-style serial killer terrorizing Iron Lake, so by starting up his old habits, Dexter is preparing to take on a new villain like in the old days, and one that could possibly be his last. With Harrison back under his care, Dexter has more to worry about than just himself when tackling the new killer.
