Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 6.

As the titular serial killer returns in Dexter: New Blood, he is accompanied by cameos from Dexter’s original seasons—and while a cameo from his adopted father Harry might seem natural for the character’s ending, a surprise Doakes appearance would ultimately be more important. It is expected that New Blood will close the book on Dexter Morgan for good, potentially setting up his son Harrison to follow in his murderous footsteps. As such, former characters from the killer’s past have already begun popping up in what could be Michael C. Hall’s final season in the lead role.

Sergeant James Doakes (Erik King) appears in Dexter seasons 1 and 2 and then makes a few appearances later down the line via flashbacks. From his introduction in the original series premiere, Doakes senses that there is something off about Dexter, but he doesn’t know exactly what it is. In Dexter season 2 he briefly believes that the blood spatter analyst is actually a junkie after seeing him at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting and lays off of him. Eventually, Doakes concludes that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher and meets his end in an explosion at the end of Dexter season 2, before he can share what he knows.

Dexter: New Blood has already included appearances from members of the original Dexter cast. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) appears to Dexter in his imaginary visions and Angel Batista (David Zayas) gives a talk at a conference and speaks to Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) about the Bay Harbor Butcher case. John Lithgow has also been confirmed to be making an appearance as the Trinity Killer. While an appearance from James Remar’s Harry Morgan might seem important to closing Dexter’s story, the most important cameo yet to come would actually be Sergeant James Doakes.

Dexter’s Harry Arc Has Already Been Explored

In the original Dexter TV series, Dexter Morgan’s relationship with Harry Morgan and the code he instilled in the serial killer is explored extensively. In Dexter season 1 the basics of Harry’s Code are established as a setup for how Dexter operates. Throughout the rest of the series, his faith in the code and in Harry himself waxes and wanes.

When Dexter learns that Harry killed himself after realizing what he had created in Dexter, Dexter’s faith in both the man and the code are shaken for a time and he starts to develop his own understanding of it. Harry appears to him in visions repeatedly from season 3 onwards. Finally, in Dexter season 8, the whole arc is brought to a close when he learns that Harry did not invent the code by himself, but rather with the help of Dr. Evelyn Vogel. Ultimately, by the time that Dexter: New Blood begins, Dexter’s relationship with Harry has been extensively explored and beaten from every angle and a cameo from Harry would serve little purpose in closing out Dexter’s final narrative.

Doakes Really Understood Dexter

Harry was able to see the early signs of what Dexter would become, and he worked to channel those impulses into what he saw as a positive avenue. However, James Doakes was the only police officer who saw through Dexter’s mask as an adult and demonstrated a much deeper understanding of who Dexter was. From the start, he was able to call out Dexter as being “off” somehow and was ostracized by others who didn’t have the same instinct. Instead of being truly vindicated, Dexter season 2 has Doakes killed by Lila and it was always somewhat of an injustice to a character who deserved a better sendoff.

There’s an implication that Doakes’ understanding of Dexter’s killing comes from a better understanding of himself. Doakes’ dark past is implied throughout Dexter with his connection to Black Ops and his officer-related shootings. Both Doakes and Dexter see their kills as being to the benefit of the public good and as Dexter has had many years to reflect on that and try to change his ways by the events of New Blood, a Doakes cameo in the revival could add a new depth to the story.

Doakes Foreshadowed Rita and Deb’s Deaths

In the original Dexter, James Doakes not only understood Dexter but was given a prophetic role in the show. Before his death in Dexter season 2, Doakes warns him that if he continues on with his current path then he will end up hurting those that he loves. He specifically states that he’s talking about “your sister or your girlfriend or even those kids.” Doakes’ warning serves to foreshadow Deb’s eventual death in the Dexter season 8 finale and Rita’s season 4 demise, as well as the struggles of Cody and Astor after their mother’s death.

It is likely that Doakes meant that Dexter could end up physically killing those that he loved himself. This is set up by Doakes’ storyline with Curtis Barnes earlier in season 2, as he learns that Barnes’ trauma led to him killing his wife. Doakes then reveals that he left his wife because he was worried that he too might hurt her one day. Despite Doakes’ literal intentions, narratively he still foreshadows Rita and Deb’s deaths and a returning cameo from Doakes in Dexter: New Blood would give him a satisfying “told you so” moment.

A Doakes Cameo Can Lead To Dexter’s Ending

Dexter’s existence as a serial killer is threatened several times throughout the original Dexter TV show. However, perhaps the most compelling is the threat that comes from the corner that Doakes backs him into. When confronted with the fact that he must either kill Doakes and break Harry’s Code, frame Doakes for the killings, or turn himself in—he ultimately dismisses the idea of suicide—he eventually decides to turn himself in. This leads to Dexter setting his affairs in order and working to say goodbye to Rita and Deb. It is only when Deb accidentally convinces Dexter that life outside of prison is worth it that he returns to his plans to frame Doakes, a revelation Doakes never learns of because of Lila’s surprising actions.

While Dexter later mocks the idea that he would turn himself in, in the moment he thanks Doakes and says that he truly values their conversations and his ability to be open with him. If New Blood eventually ends with Dexter turning himself in to Angela (as he had originally planned to confess to Deb) then an appearance of Doakes in his mind to help solidify the idea would pay off a character who was treated so poorly by the original Dexter. And, ultimately, if Doakes were to make an unexpected return in Dexter’s mind in Dexter: New Blood, internet memes have ensured that he has an obvious opening line.
