Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

Disney’s Frozen may have come out in 2013, but it’s become an animated classic in its own right, on par with many of Disney’s earlier princess movies. Anna and Elsa have become household names, and for good reason. Their story is one of sisterly love and finding oneself, the perfect modern princess story for young girls — and it’s full of satisfying moments.

The original Frozen balances emotions and comedy well, with its storylines taking on a light and humorous tone, even if there are darker moments interspersed throughout. Anna and Elsa have undoubtedly seen their fair share of tragedy, but their journey in the first film is also full of laughter. So, which moments are the funniest and which are the saddest to watch?

10 Saddest: Anna’s Accident

Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

Frozen introduces Elsa and Anna as children, and for the most part, they’re everything two kids their age should be. There’s an air of playfulness and adventure surrounding both of them, but that’s abruptly cut short when Elsa accidentally hurts Anna with her power one night. The near-fatal injury is one that Anna appears to quickly get over — but Elsa is never the same afterward.

Because of this incident, Elsa begins to fear her own powers and distance herself from her sister. Of course, her parents’ reactions don’t help — they essentially encourage her to suppress her powers and become a recluse. It’s a sad moment in her story, and one that has big consequences for her moving forward.

9 Funniest: Adult Anna’s Relatable Intro

Following the recap of Anna and Elsa’s shortlived childhood, Frozen jumps ahead in time. And when viewers first meet young adult Anna, she’s hilariously relatable — well, if you’re a young woman who’s a bit of a mess from time to time anyway.

Our first glimpse of grown-up Anna is with her hair standing up in all directions and drool on her pillow, but she soon reveals an affinity for sneaking chocolate when no one’s looking and being charmingly awkward. It’s a refreshing take on a Disney princess, and it makes for a fun introduction to Anna’s character.

8 Saddest: The Parents’ Deaths

Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

As though Elsa’s traumatic experience with Anna didn’t weigh heavily enough on their childhoods, the girls’ parents perish not that long after. “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” starts off as a fun, humorous bop, but it quickly takes a turn when Anna attempts to mourn with Elsa toward the end — and her older sister is too afraid and aloof to even give her that much.

To be fair, viewers don’t actually know the parents well enough to feel sorrow for them. It’s hard not to be sad for the girls, however, who are left to handle their grief at a young age, even though they don’t know how.

7 Funniest: Finish Each Other’s…

Prince Hans is probably the worst Frozen character, but he puts on a good act for “Love Is an Open Door.” His instant chemistry with Anna — which, okay, is suspicious in hindsight — isn’t even the reason this song is such a hit, though. Its lyrics are bound to elicit a laugh from even the most cynical watcher, and there’s one in particular that’s always worthy of a chuckle.

“We finish each other’s sandwiches” is such a great line, and honestly, it’s pretty much #relationshipgoals. It’s definitely one of the film’s best one-liners, even if these two won’t be finishing each other’s sandwiches by the end of the story.

6 Saddest: Elsa’s Secret Comes Out

Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

It’s heartbreaking enough that Elsa believes her power to be a curse following Anna’s accident as a child, but her watching the people of Arendelle react pretty much exactly as she expected them to is just another obstacle the poor girl doesn’t deserve — and it’ll leave fans feeling for her in the aftermath.

To be fair, Elsa does freeze their entire town following the ball at the beginning of the film, but treating her like she’s an evil witch seems a bit excessive. It forces her to relive what she experienced with her parents all over again, but thankfully, she comes out stronger and more confident afterward.

5 Funniest: In Summer

Olaf’s introduction as a snowman who longs for beaches and warm weather is hilarious in itself, but his entire song, “In Summer,” is easily one of Frozen’s most comical moments. Olaf is completely oblivious to the fact that he’s a snowman, and he seems to have no insight into what that would mean if he wound up on a beach somewhere.

Of course, this is the fun of following Olaf — he has no idea what he’s doing, but he’s ridiculously confident anyway — and his introduction highlights everything that makes his character so hilarious throughout the rest of the film (and the sequel!).

4 Saddest: Hans’ Betrayal

Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

After everything she’s been through, it’s difficult not to root for Anna throuhgout the course of Frozen. She deserves happiness, and that makes watching Hans betray her that much harder. She seems so certain he’s the “true love” that will break the spell — and the realization that he’s been using her this entire time isn’t easy on her (or the viewers).

Luckily, the fact that Kristoff is so obviously better for her — and the fact that she’s going to be reunited with her sister — softens the blow of this betrayal. Still, fans may find themselves wondering whether these girls can ever catch a break as bad things continue to happen to them.

3 Funniest: The Trolls

Speaking of Kristoff, he’s another character with quite a few hysterical one-liners scattered throughout Frozen. And one of those moments involves him introducing Anna to the trolls who raised him and Sven — only, since they’re curled up into balls, Anna’s response to his supposed family is simply, “They’re rocks?”

The trolls spring to life not long after, and they’re fun additions to the movie, adding some more lightness to the story. This whole sequence is pretty funny, and with Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf so heavily involved, how could it not be?

2 Saddest: Olaf Melts

Disney 5 Saddest (& 5 Funniest) Moments In Frozen

Given that Olaf offers so much comic relief throughout Frozen, it’s that much sadder when his character actually gets serious. And his realization that he’s going to melt at the end — paired with his sentiment that “some people are worth melting for” — will have viewers a little teary-eyed during the movie’s final act.

Luckily, Olaf doesn’t stay melted for long — but that doesn’t make it any easier for viewers to watch reality finally hit him. (At least his own little flurry cloud more than makes up for the sad moment!)

1 Funniest: Hans Getting His Just Desserts

Viewers will be desperate to see Hans get what’s coming to him by the end of Frozen, and that’s what makes his final scene so satisyfing to watch — even if it isn’t funny in the traditional sense.

Anna’s only reaction to Hans attempting to sweet talk his way out of punishment is to punch him, sending him flying off their ship and into the water. It evokes applause from the townspeople, and it’s humorous enough to get a laugh from the movie’s audience as well.
