Mr. Charles Carson

“What would be the point of living if we didn’t let life change us?”

As the head butler of Downton Abbey, Mr. Carson takes his job quite seriously. His no-nonsense, adhering-to-the-rules approach has served him well in his position, but this curmudgeonly demeanor keeps most people at more than a mere arm’s length away. When Mrs. Hughes’ old flame, Joe Burns, proposes, she confides to Carson that she doesn’t want to marry him as she wants different things in life now. Carson offers this response. It is his rigidity that makes this quote so surprising. It’s hard to imagine the unyielding Mr. Carson letting anything—even life’s most dramatic events—alter him in any way.

Mrs. Elsie Carson (née Hughes)

“We must all have our hearts broken once or twice before we’re done.”

A perennial favorite, Mrs. Carson possesses many positive qualities. She is fair-minded, kind-hearted, and highly practical. But she is also a very private person, keeping her winning hand very close to her chest. She shares very little of her past and personal life with those around her—even those nearest and dearest to her.

When Daisy fails to thank Mr. Molesley for the offer of lending her a book, Mrs. Patmore quickly reprimands her, uttering this quote. He is a man of strong principles who does not seem to be motivated by material things at all. When Thomas is showing Bates how to carry out his duties in his new position of valet, he makes this remark while looking over Mr. Crawley’s collection of snuff boxes. It is Bates’ impeccable character that makes this quote so surprising. It’s hard for viewers to believe that Mr. Bates has considered the value of the Crawley’s possessions at all, let alone referring them to as “pirates” amassing a “horde.”

Mrs. Anna Bates (née Smith)

“I’ll kill myself.”

After Anna is sexually assaulted, she is asked what she will do if she is pregnant. Her response that she would kill herself highlights her frail state of mind as this is not something that Anna would normally ever contemplate. Anna has always been one to pick herself up and persevere in the face of adversity. After all, she handled John’s false imprisonment with a stoicism that was truly inspiring. That is what makes this quote so poignant and out of character, illustrating the impact that this devastating event has had on her psyche.

Mr. Thomas Barrow

“There are times I would like to belong.”

While Thomas did become a better human being late in the series, for much of the time, he was a rat and a scoundrel—inflicting pain on everyone around him. When he wasn’t plotting against his nemesis, John Bates, he could be seen sparring with underlings and firing insults at anyone within hearing distance. Following Jimmy’s departure from Downton, Anna shows concern for Thomas causing him to utter this admission. It has always appeared that Thomas’ sole goal was to make an enemy out of everyone he encountered, making his confession that he longed to belong quite staggering.

Mrs. Daisy Mason (née Robinson)

“I’m never excited.”

The kitchen maid, Daisy, has not had an easy life. And, her rather excitable nature has led her to have more than her share of culinary mishaps—and tongue lashings from Mrs. Patmore. When she is presented with the opportunity to go to London with Mrs. Hughes to collect Cora’s brother and mother, Ethan asks her if she is excited. She replies, “I’m never excited,” which fans know is not true. She falls in and out of love faster than Mary can bat her eyelashes. And, she spends much of her day in a tizzy, up to her elbows in flour, worrying over her latest paramour. This is why her declaration regarding her lack of excitability comes as such a surprise.

Mr. Joseph Molesley

“Sometimes it’s better to take a risk than to go down the wrong path.”

Poor Mr. Molesley has spent much of his existence doing what others expect of him. He simply lets life happen. Much to his dismay, he is hired to “watch a man a get dressed.” After the said man dies, he is demoted to a footman. And, all along the way, he nurses the dream of becoming a teacher. When he suspects that Baxter has a dark secret in her past, he offers this quote as advice. Joseph Moseley, however, is not a natural risk-taker and prefers to stick to the road more traveled. This is why his recommendation to take risks is so out of character.

Miss Sarah O’Brien

“Very droll. If she’s got a boyfriend, I’m a giraffe.”

Miss O’Brien is a crafty schemer who easily slides into the role of Thomas Barrow’s evil sidekick. Her tongue is toxic. She deeply resents her subservient lot in life and makes snide remarks about her employers’ expectations at every opportunity. She makes this “giraffe” remark about Mrs. Hughes’ absences while meeting paramour, Joe Burns.

Sarah O’Brien is not one to utter kind words or make a good-natured joke. That is why this light-hearted comment comparing herself to an oddly-proportioned animal goes against her snarky nature.

Mr. Tom Branson

“I don’t believe in types, I believe in people.”

While Branson later married his way “upstairs,” he began his life as the Crawley family’s chauffeur—earning him a place among his downstairs cohorts. When viewers first meet Tom, he is a rebel and Irish socialist with very strong views. In his eyes, the British aristocracy is the enemy. This is why his Season 6 proclamation to Sarah Bunting following a political meeting that he doesn’t see people as “types” is such a shock. It likely reflects the fact that he has come to love the aristocratic family that has embraced him as one of their own, but it still reflects a huge change from this character’s early beliefs.
