Dr Seuss Tops Amazon Bestsellers List After Publisher Pulls Racist Books

Several of Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s books are among Amazon’s best sellers list after its publisher announced it will no longer publish six of his titles because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”

The Cat in the Hat is currently Number 1 on the Amazon Best Sellers list, followed by Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Also on the list is Dr. Seuss’s Beginner Book Collection, which includes The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, Hop on Pop and Fox in Socks. In all, nine of Amazon’s Top 10 sellers and 29 of the top 50 are Seuss books.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it will no longer publish or license Seuss’s first children’s title, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, and five others: If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super! and The Cat’s Quizzer. Several books in the Seuss catalog have been criticized as containing offensive and racist content.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, who died in 1991, wrote and illustrated 65 children’s books under the pen name Dr. Seuss and the alternate pen name Theo LeSeig (“Geisel” spelled in reverse). Several of Seuss’s books have been adapted into specials and TV shows, and animated and live-action films, including How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax and Horton Hears a Who.
