Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Dragon Age 2 might not be the most expensive of the Dragon Age games, and it might have been met with mixed feelings by fans, but it does have some of the most dynamic and memorable companion characters.

From the moody elf with a tragic backstory in Fenris to the mage with a cause in Anders, several characters left a big impact on fans of the game. Overall, Dragon Age 2 might have the best combination of companions of any of the games so far, especially because they interact with each other in some rather fascinating examples of dialogue, too. However, some of these companions are better than others.

10 Carver Hawke

If players want a companion who is determined to not like them and make things difficult for them from the start, then Carver is the one to pick. He resents his older sibling and always second-guesses their decisions.

It’s difficult to gain his approval, and his dialogue options aren’t even that refreshing or fun to go through. Plus, his design feels the least interesting and most basic of any of the companions, and his storyline is less compelling than most.

9 Sebastian Vael

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Sebastian is a companion that’s only available through a DLC, and truthfully, he’s kind of boring compared to some of the other people The Champion of Kirkwall can interact with. He sticks to a strict code of ethics.

While he might be a potential prince, he’s dedicated to the Chantry. This means a romance option with him isn’t nearly as dynamic as the others. Overall, fans were a bit disappointed in him, and if players never had him on their party, they’re not missing a lot.

8 Dog

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Dog is another companion that isn’t available in just the base game, but the beloved companion can be purchased in DLCs. While most players love interacting with a pet in an RPG, there’s nothing particularly stand-apart about this Mabari hound.

They are fun to have, and most players care about them because they are an animal. However, players can’t talk to them or make much progress in a relationship.

7 Bethany Hawke

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Bethany is the Champion’s other sibling, and while she’s not the most exciting companion, she’s much better than Carver. She’s a decent mage to have on the team, and she’s much more agreeable and rewarding to interact with than her brother, Carver.

Bethany has a more interesting storyline as well seeing as she’s a mage who has to deal with all the political and social aspects of that in Kirkwall. She feels more like a sibling Hawke can bond with and care about than Carver does. Plus, just like with Carver, she’s really only an option for the first act of the game.

6 Merrill

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Merrill is a character who can be frustrating to deal with, and she’s definitely not every player’s cup of tea. She’s shy and nervous, and she needs a lot of reassurance. Overall, she’s not going to provide as much excitement when in the player’s party, but she is, at least, more well-rounded and thoughtful than some other characters. Merrill does have an interesting relationship with blood magic, but she has a self-destructive streak that’s difficult to deal with.

5 Aveline Vallen

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Aveline isn’t exactly a fun character, but she does have some of the most consistent characterization of any of the people Hawke can pal around with. Aveline does have the ability to be extremely loyal to Hawke, but she isn’t easy to please unless the players are law-abiding.

However, once the player gains her trust, she will forgive a lot of things that Hawke gets up to. Plus, Aveline is a very useful tank to have in battle situations.

4 Anders

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Anders is a character that fans tend to love or hate, but no one can say he’s boring. As an apostate mage and former Grey Warden, he’s got a fascinating backstory. And the fact that he’s literally playing host to an unstable spirit of Justice means he literally blows everything up. He’s hard to trust, and he will end up lying to Hawke. However, if fans like dramatic storylines, Anders is interesting.

Plus, Anders brings up many of the key themes and conflicts in the game when it comes to mages and their freedoms. And, if the player needs a great healer for their party, Andres is very useful.

3 Isabela

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Isabela isn’t a character that players can completely trust or rely on, and no matter what, she will betray Hawke. However, just because she isn’t particularly moral or even reliable doesn’t mean she’s not an interesting character. She is fun to interact with as she’s witty and more complex than she seems.

She provides a lot of conflict in the game and dramatic interactions, and this isn’t always a bad thing in a game that’s really driven forward by its characters. After all, she is a pirate, so it’s an adventure with her as a character.

2 Fenris

Dragon Age The Best Companions From Dragon Age 2 Ranked

Given that Fenris is a brooding, handsome elf, it’s no shock that fans love him and that he’s one of the most popular characters to romance. His backstory as an escaped slave is harrowing and leads to some of the most compelling dialogue cutscenes in the game.

While it’s hard to gain his trust, he is extremely loyal to Hawke after this point. He can be difficult to deal with and antagonistic, but this can be a fun challenge. And, he’s one of the more powerful warriors in the game.

1 Varric Tethras

Varric is the Dragon Age character that almost every fan loves. In fact, he was so well-loved that he was even included as a companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition and the only thing fans are still mad about is he can’t be romanced.

Varric is extremely fun to have conversations with as he’s witty, quick, and also extremely supportive. He and Hawke can easily become the best of friends. He’s the Champion’s biggest supporter and also their storyteller.
