Dragon Ball Super’s Transformations Can’t Match GT’s Super Saiyan 4

Dragon Ball Super’s Super Saiyan God and Blue adopt many of the same qualities of Dragon Ball GT’s Super Saiyan 4, but to a lesser extent.

Dragon Ball Supers Transformations Cant Match GTs Super Saiyan 4

Many fans still regard Dragon Ball Super’s Super Saiyan God and Blue transformations as the fourth and fifth forms that the indigenous species of Planet Vegeta can unlock respectively, straight up ignoring Dragon Ball GT’s proprietary Super Saiyan 4 (SSJ4) form. This undoubtedly comes as a result of GT being anime-only and involving numerous writers besides mangaka Akira Toriyama exclusively. Moreover, Toei Animation’s Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru designed the overall look of SSJ4.

Dragon Ball Super clearly doesn’t consider Dragon Ball GT canon, either. SSJ4 has yet to appear and Super Saiyan God and Blue have taken on many of the same qualities as their forgotten predecessor, severely lessening the possibility of it ever returning. But no matter how hard Toriyama might try to erase SSJ4, it is still vastly more compelling than any of the new Super Saiyan transformations.

The relationship between Super Saiyan God and Blue in Dragon Ball Super emulates the connection between the Golden Great Ape and SSJ4 in GT. Saiyans can only achieve SSJ4 after successfully transforming into the super versions of these monstrous creatures, as becoming SSJ4 essentially requires the power and appearance of the apes to be condensed into a humanoid form. Super Saiyan God is also the natural stepping stone to unlocking Super Saiyan Blue. It occurs when a Super Saiyan God goes Super Saiyan, hence why it was originally given the overly clunky name Super Saiyan Super Saiyan God.

Additionally, both how a Saiyan becomes a Super Saiyan God and how a Golden Great Ape turns into a SSJ4 requires the involvement of third parties. Ascending to a Super Saiyan God is contingent on a ritual that involves five righteous Saiyans channeling their ki to a sixth Saiyan. Similarly, the Golden Great Apes need to be exposed to so-called Blutz Waves to transform more than once, except for Goku, of course. However, Dragon Ball Super’s rule only applies to the first time a Saiyan achieves their God form. The same isn’t the case for SSJ4. Super Saiyan God also possesses a unique trait originally applicable only to SSJ4. Both forms can absorb the energy from attacks directed at them. But SSJ4 takes this to a level beyond God as the utilization of such a technique drains the latter’s power unlike the former. SSJ4 can redirect this new energy to bolster a preexisting signature technique, like when SSJ4 Goku recycles Great Ape Baby’s Revenge Death Ball Final into a 10x Kamehameha.

What made SSJ4 so innovative at the time was not only how it incorporated a super version of a classic and forgotten Saiyan form (i.e. Great Ape), but its overall design. Until that point, all Super Saiyan forms were aesthetically similar to the first, just slightly tweaking their signature golden hair to some degree. However, SSJ4 put an abrupt end to the then-beleaguered pattern by introducing a new innovative design that was fresh yet still looked like a Super Saiyan. Dragon Ball Super followed GT’s example with Super Saiyan God with the user losing their natural bulk and appearing to shed some years off their face. Super Saiyan Blue, however, reverted back to old habits, with the color of the hair essentially being the only noticeable change.

Another standout feature of SSJ4 that far exceeds Super’s forms includes how some Saiyans adopt a few of the Great Apes’ characteristics, such as becoming colder or less rational. This resumed a traditional aspect of most Super Saiyan transformations where the personality of the Saiyan changes (usually for the worst), a phenomenon that the third level unfortunately dropped. Dragon Ball Super fails to continue this compelling tradition again, since God causes the Saiyan to react more levelheadedly. Although it’s reassuring that mangaka Akira Toriyama adopted certain aspects of Dragon Ball GT’s most innovative transformation for Dragon Ball Super’s forms, it’s upsetting that fans might never experience the epic nature of Super Saiyan 4 again.
