Dragon Ball Theory Goku Can Already Beat Beerus

One of Goku’s goals in Dragon Ball Super is to surpass Beerus, but it’s possible that the Saiyan hero already has. Beerus is Universe 7’s God of Destruction; he’s easily one of the most powerful beings in the world of Dragon Ball and potentially the greatest foe Goku has ever faced.

In Dragon Ball Super’s opening story arc, Battle of Gods, excitement re-entered Goku’s life with the arrival of Beerus and Whis. Due to dreams experienced by Beerus, the two visited King Kai in search of a mysterious Super Saiyan God. After effortlessly defeating Goku on King Kai’s planet, Beerus turned his attention to Earth and battled Vegeta. After being angered by Buu, Beerus threatened to destroy the planet but was opposed by Goku. After going through a ritual that transformed him into the legendary Super Saiyan God, Goku challenged Beerus again.

After several episodes of fighting, Goku finally fell to Beerus, who revealed that he was holding back the entire time. Apparently, even with his newfound strength, Goku was still no match for the God of Destruction. Since then, Beerus has made multiple visits to Earth to enjoy its food, and on three occasions, has had to rely on Goku and the Z-Warriors to compete in competitions against other universes. During this time, Goku has expressed an interest in increasing his strength so that he can eventually fight Beerus again and defeat him. This has been a bit of a long-term plan for him, but it could be that he has already acquired the means to defeat Beerus.

How Goku Has Improved Since Battle of Gods

Goku has come a long way since the Battle of Gods Saga. In the storyline that proceeded it, the Golden Frieza Saga, Goku took his Super Saiyan God upgrade to the next level with the much more powerful Super Saiyan Blue. Goku found a way to make it even stronger in the Universe 6 tournament, when he applied his Kaio-ken technique to the Super Saiyan Blue transformation in the fight against Hit. Though Goku didn’t unlock any other new levels until the end of Dragon Ball Super, his power in general grew as time passed, thanks in large part to the training he received from Whis.

In the Tournament of Power, the time Goku spent with Whis paid off when he accessed an incomplete state of Ultra Instinct, shocking everyone in attendance. His Ultra Instinct ability allowed him to effortlessly dodge attacks made by opponents like Kefla and Jiren. In his final fight with Jiren, Goku achieved the complete Ultra Instinct form, and was finally powerful enough to overwhelm the Universe 11 Pride Trooper. Goku is now so far above what he was before. Just prior to the tournament, he fought Top to a stalemate, which was discouraging at the time because he was told that Top was weaker than Jiren. And though only a short amount of time has gone by, Goku is stronger than both of them.

Why Goku May Be Stronger Than Beerus Now

Dragon Ball Super made it clear that a wide power gap existed between Goku and Beerus in the Battle of Gods Saga. It’s worth wondering if that gap is still present; it could be that Goku has progressed so much that if he were to fight Beerus again, he would emerge victorious. The Super Saiyan Blue upgrade wouldn’t be enough to take down Beerus, but the other gains he’s made could be the key. During his battle with Hit, Beerus outwardly remained confident that he could still beat Goku, but he did seem a bit concerned about how far Goku had come when he saw what he could do with his Kaio-ken technique. Even then, Goku likely would have lost to Beerus, but everything changed in the Tournament of Power when he used Ultra Instinct to beat Jiren. It was confirmed at that moment that Goku was on the level of the gods.

That of course doesn’t mean that Goku can beat any god, but there have been hints that he could be stronger than Beerus at least. Whis stated that Universe 11’s God of Destruction, Belmod, is stronger than him. Beerus refuted the statement, claiming that they only tested each other in an arm-wrestling contest. If Whis is right about Belmod being stronger than Beerus, that would greatly improve Goku’s chances of winning, since it was directly stated that Belmod was inferior to Jiren. Also, Beerus was visibly alarmed when he heard that Goku stills to intend to defeat him in the future, possibly because he knows he’d lose.

Why Goku vs. Beerus Rematch Is Unlikely To Happen

One thing that viewers may expect from the next Dragon Ball anime is a rematch between Goku and Beerus. So much has happened since the Battle of Gods Saga that a different result is guaranteed (even if Beerus still triumphs in the end). The prospect of Goku finally overtaking Beerus would make such a fight even more exciting, which is all the more reason for it not to happen. Perhaps the most important element of Beerus’ character in Dragon Ball Super is his nature as a seemingly unbeatable god. Of course, Beerus is known to be weaker than Whis, the Grand Minister, and Grand Zeno, but he has a much different relationship with the Z-Warriors, who have always been thought of as mediocre in comparison to Beerus.

Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, Piccolo, Bulma, and all the others are always conscious of the fact that Beerus could destroy their whole planet on a whim. If the Dragon Ball franchise let Goku beat Beerus, it would change that dynamic forever – and not in a good way. Beerus has become a key supporting character, and for that reason it’s hard to imagine the anime threatening his reputation as the strongest character in Universe 7. For him to maintain the role he currently has in the franchise, the Z-Warriors should never lose their fear of Beerus. That’s part of what makes their interactions so fun to see, and that’s why it’s better for Dragon Ball to simply give viewers the impression that Goku would win, but never to demonstrate it outright.

Furthermore, Goku doesn’t need to beat Beerus in a fight to prove himself. He revealed that he had reached the powers of gods before all the Gods of Destruction. The strongest beings in existence are now fully aware of Goku and what he’s capable of. If it’s indeed true that he has surpassed Beerus, no enemy weaker than a God of Destruction will be sufficient to challenge Goku in the future.
