Entourage creator Doug Ellin is angry at HBO for what he perceives as burying the show. Entourage is loosely based on the life of Mark Wahlberg and aired on HBO from 2004 to 2011. The series follows the career of young up-and-coming movie star Vincent Chase alongside his childhood best friend and manager E, his half-brother and fellow actor Johnny ‘Drama’ Chase, his friend and driver Sal ‘Turtle’ Assante, and his fire mouth agent Ari Gold.

Entourage was a big hit for HBO when it first premiered and garnered multiple award nominations, including 26 Primetime Emmy nominations and 14 Golden Globe nominations. The series was popular enough to gain its own feature film in 2015, though that under-performed at the box office. Entourage’s look at Hollywood often led them to predicting movies that eventually became reality, like a new Great Gatsby movie or an Aquaman movie. But that look at Hollywood also showed a darker side of the industry, a side that doesn’t seem as funny given what audiences now know about the verbal and physical abuse that some producers inflict behind the scenes as well as sexual harassment and assault that went rampant for years.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Entourage creator Doug Ellin is not happy with HBO as he sees the network as trying to bury the series. He says Entourage doesn’t appear as one of the promoted series on HBO Max despite the series being critically praised at the time of its release. He blames a ‘PC culture’ for retroactively impacting the series legacy. Read his full quote, below:

“For a while, we were hiding in, like, ‘wish-fulfillment shows…We were nominated for the Emmys or the Golden Globes almost every single year, so to not put us on the must-see comedy list was pretty bizarre…I resent it tremendously. I don’t think Entourage was this vulgar boys fest that it is painted as now. When we came out, the New York Times said we were the smartest show on television. Then all of a sudden this righteous wave of PC culture, and again you are talking to a liberal who wants equality for all and wants everyone to be kinder and gentler, when people write about it they say something that Ari said is how I express myself which it’s really offensive.”

The legacy of Entourage is a complicated one. While the show still does have its fans, it is hard to ignore that certain jokes have fallen out of fashion. Throughout its seven-season run, Entourage featured a lot of jokes at various characters’ races, sexuality, and genders. Ari Gold screaming at his employees and threatening them doesn’t seem as funny when audiences know the awful truth of how Scott Rudin treated his employees. The series features a Harvey Weinstein-type character named Harvey Weingard whose anger is played for laughs when in reality, Weinstein’s action were horrific and harmed a lot of people. Jeremy Piven, who played Ari Gold and was considered the breakout character, has also been accused of sexual assault by multiple women who worked with him through his career. Even a number of guest stars on Entourage carry a certain level of baggage with them, including Brett Ratner, Armie Hammer, and Piers Morgan, and can take away from the enjoyment of the show now.

Despite all of Entourage’s perceived faults, a critical revaluation of the series could be just what the show needs. Given it is a long-running series on HBO it is bound to have fans that, if given the chance, would want to take another shot at the series, one that could embrace the changes in society since the original series ended and even tackle some of its more dated aspects. Taking a show and approaching it in a drastically different way has worked for series like Battlestar Galactica, Riverdale and even the upcoming Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot will take a more serious look at the material.
