Eternals Ending Means The MCUs Odin Replacement Can Still Appear In Future

Though Eternals cut out its own version of the Odin character, the film’s ending leaves an opening for him to make a future appearance. Director Chloé Zhao’s MCU debut Eternals garnered mixed reviews, but made great strides for Marvel in terms of representation and variation on the typical franchise story structure. The original characters may have been a rather niche offshoot of the Marvel comic universe, but the film adaption has introduced a powerful new set of heroes and potential stories, while expanding the MCU on a cosmic level.

Eternals tells the story of a team of immortal heroes who have protected human life on Earth from the very beginning. Each Eternal is gifted with godlike abilities, such as superhuman strength, speed, and durability, as well as some powers that are unique to them, like mind control or specialized energy blasts. Because of their immortality and incredible powers many Eternals—such as Ikaris and Thena—have wound up as the inspiration for ancient folklore and deities. This is a fairly faithful adaptation of the comics, in which the Eternals have powers on par with, and often interact with, the deities of the Marvel comics, such as the Greek gods of Olympus, and Asgardians like Thor.

There’s one critical aspect of comic book history that Eternals leaves out on film—the Earth-based Eternals’ leader and most powerful member, Zuras. While there are a variety of reasons Zuras didn’t make it into the movie, Eternals’ ending leaves the door open for him to potentially appear in the future. With Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) departing Earth to seek out more Eternals on other worlds, it’s possible they will encounter the MCU’s version of Zuras and bring him into the fold for future Eternals ventures.

In the comics, it’s Zuras, not Ajak, who is the Eternals’ leader. He possesses all the same powers as the rest of the team, such as invulnerability, flight, energy and matter manipulation, and teleportation. He is by far the strongest Eternal, and the most skilled at energy manipulation in particular, able to harness immense concussive force, heat, light, and more. Zuras is also the only Eternal who can initiate the Uni-Mind, which allows all of them to share their collective power. Though Zuras himself isn’t present in Eternals, some of his attributes still are; Sersi wields the Uni-Mind in his place, and Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-seok) uses cosmic energy to augment his already impressive strength in a way that seems reminiscent of Zuras.

Ajak (Salma Hayek) works well as an alternative team leader because of her comic version’s unique ability to communicate directly with Celestials. This also may not be the only reason Marvel changed the Eternals’ leader; the character has much in common with Thor’s father, Odin, since both are god-level immortal patriarchs who wield a great deal of cosmic power. Including Zuras in the MCU right away with Eternals could have felt redundant in this regard. However, Anthony Hopkins’ character has been absent from the MCU since his death in Thor: Ragnarok, so it could actually be fitting to introduce Zuras as a sort of replacement for Odin the Allfather in future films. Given how Eternals’ ending sets up a clear possibility of introducing more Eternals, it would be easy to incorporate him later on, further expanding this fascinating corner of the MCU.
