A terrifying Angel from Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion is set to invade PUBG (Player Unknown’s Battleground) Mobile.

According to Crunchyroll, a new gameplay mode, called ‘Core Circle,’ will appear in the game from May 19 to June 16 and feature the anime’s 6th Angel and the EVA-01 mecha. Matches will kick off with gamers starting in special Blue Zones with the Angel wreaking absolute havoc through the play area. The EVA-01 will have a different spawn point and players will be able to locate it by following the path of destruction.

Vincent Wang, PUBG Mobile’s head of publishing at Tencent Games, stated, “Evangelion is one of the most famous and recognisable anime series of all time, so we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring its unique action, and futuristic world to PUBG MOBILE. The ‘Core Circle’ game mode continues our commitment to give players unforgettable experiences based on universally acclaimed and culturally significant partners, enriching the PUBG MOBILE experience for both current and new players.”

Gamers will also be able to collect special in-game items, like the themed armor and the iconic plugsuits from the anime, throughout the Evangelion event. A currently unknown character will also be added to PUBG Mobile that players will be able to partner with.

Produced by studio Gainax (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) and animated by studio Tatsunoko (Season 2 of Psycho-Pass), Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion originally aired from October 1995 to March 1996 with a total of 26 episodes. The story follows teenager Shinji Ikari, who is recruited by his father to join Nerv, a mysterious organization; and pilot a giant bio-mecha in order to battle monsters called Angels. The series is arguably one of the most influential pieces of science fiction ever made with its impact reflected in anime like Rurouni Kenshin, Excel Saga and Jujutsu Kaisen and western animations such as Gravity Falls and Steven Universe. Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon A Time, the movie that concluded the anime’s story, premiered last year and was one of Japan’s highest-grossing movies for 2021.
